Job Title: Special Assistant Attorney General

Mississippi Attorney General’s Office | Criminal Appeals Division (Direct Appeals Team)

The Criminal Appeals Division is seeking an attorney with strong research, writing, and advocacy skills to serve on its Direct Appeals Team. This team represents the State in defending felony convictions and sentences on appeal. The position primarily involves briefing and, at times, oral argument before the Mississippi Court of Appeals and the Mississippi Supreme Court. This position offers the opportunity to engage in meaningful appellate advocacy and contribute to the development of criminal law in Mississippi.

This attorney must be able to craft clear, persuasive, and well-reasoned legal arguments both

in writing and orally. The position requires the ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with other appellate attorney team members.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

• Reviewing and analyzing trial court records in felony criminal cases

• Conducting thorough legal research

• Drafting persuasive appellate briefs and related filings

• Presenting oral arguments, if granted, in state appellate courts

• Participate in moot courts for your own cases and others’

• Assisting with other division responsibilities as needed

The position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to complete assignments efficiently and on both court and internal deadline.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school

• Mississippi bar license

• Strong research, analytical, and writing skills

Desirable Qualifications:

• Completion of trial or appellate court (state or federal) judicial clerkship

• Familiarity with appellate practice

Compensation:

Compensation is commensurate with experience and years of bar membership per Mississippi

State Personnel Board guidelines.
