Registered Nurse (RN) The primary responsibility of this position is to supervise the day‑to‑day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty, ensuring adherence to current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This includes maintaining the highest degree of quality care at all times and coordinating with the Director of Nursing (DON) and/or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) as applicable. General Purpose This role oversees all nursing operations, including leadership, supervision, and the implementation of policies and procedures that govern nursing care. Essential Duties Administrative Functions Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day‑to‑day functions of nursing activities. Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern nursing services. Ensure that reference material (e.g., PDR’s, regulations, professional standards) is current and available at nursing stations. Keep the Nursing Service Procedures Manual up to date and ensure all personnel comply with its procedures. Make written and oral reports or recommendations to the Director regarding operation of the nursing service department. Review departmental policies, procedures, and job descriptions periodically and recommend revisions to the Director. Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of overall care. Ensure personnel compliance with job descriptions and participate in facility surveys and inspections. Review resident written discharge plans and assist in planning the nursing portion of discharge as needed. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents per policy. Complete accident/incident reports when required. Physically interpret policies and procedures for personnel, residents, visitors, and agencies. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting. Maintain confidentiality of user IDs and passwords and report any suspected violations to the Administrator. Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system. Committee Functions Attend required committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment). Assist in preparing written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities for committees. Provide information to committees as requested and participate in developing agendas. Implement committee recommendations under the direction of the Director. Personnel Functions Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and LPNs are available for the shift. Ensure sufficient Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are available per resident needs. Develop and assign work tasks, delegating authority to Charge Nurses. Ensure nursing assistants are qualified and nurse aide trainees are supervised by a licensed nurse. Conduct daily rounds to verify staff perform tasks in accordance with nursing standards. Monitor absenteeism and report staffing gaps to the Director. Enforce department policies, including dress codes, and address complaints. Maintain a cooperative relationship with interdepartmental staff. Create a calm, supportive environment and hold regular shift meetings to address issues. Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing decisions. Administer discipline fairly while adhering to equal‑employment policies. Report occupational exposures, incidents of fraud, and computer workstation security breaches. Nursing Care Functions Notify nursing staff of new admissions, room assignments, and prepare rooms for admissions. Greet new residents, escort them to rooms, and conduct physician rounds as needed. Encourage timely physician documentation of progress notes and orders. Consult with residents, families, and physicians for care planning. Notify relevant parties of changes in resident condition. Perform direct nursing care: start IVs, obtain specimens, take vital signs, admit/transfers, and discharge residents. Monitor medication administration, review medication cards, and oversee medication passes. Supervise the use of restraints according to policy. Ensure compliance with medication storage, handling, and administration procedures. Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety. Monitor residents who cannot call for help and arrange transportation when necessary. Communicate resident deaths and coordinate funeral arrangements. Staff Development Provide and coordinate in‑service training classes (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Infection Control) and assist the In‑service Director/Educator in developing annual training programs. Safety and Sanitation Assist in developing safety standards, ensuring protective equipment is available, conducting in‑service training on blood/body‑fluid exposure, and maintaining clean, safe work areas. Equipment and Supply Functions Recommend department equipment and supplies, maintain adequate stock levels, supervise preventive maintenance, and ensure safe operation of all nursing equipment. Care Plan and Assessment Functions Develop comprehensive assessments and care plans, encourage resident participation, review and update plans, and ensure adherence to care plans by all personnel. Budget and Planning Functions Monitor economic conditions, recommend adjustments to nursing services, and report fraudulent billing or financial issues. Supervisory Requirements Assist in overall supervision and management of nursing staff; delegate authority and responsibility as necessary. Qualification Education and/or Experience • Minimum of a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university. • Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices. • Two or more years of experience, preferably in long‑term care. Language Skills • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and technical procedures; present information to managers and employees. Mathematical Skills • Apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability • Make independent decisions and solve practical problems. • Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, families, visitors, and agencies. • Leadership and supervisory competence. • Plan, organize, implement, and interpret programs, goals, and policies. • Demonstrate knowledge of nursing practices and regulations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations • Current, unencumbered RN license in the state. • Current CPR certification. • Knowledge and experience with PCC preferred. • Maintain required continuing education and remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing. Physical Demands • Move intermittently throughout the workday. • Speak and write English in an understandable manner. • Manage mental and emotional stress of the position. • Use prosthetics if required to meet sensory needs. • Perform tasks such as pushing, pulling, lifting up to 25 pounds and carrying distances of 50 feet, including potential evacuation duties. Work Environment The role involves office areas and nursing service areas, frequent interruptions, interaction with residents and personnel, occasional overtime, and potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and infectious materials.
