Human Resources Generalist

Job Posting: Human Resources Generalist Hastings Area School System Position Type: Full-Time, Other Salary Range: $70,000 – $75,000 Application Deadline: Until Filled Position Summary The HR Generalist executes day-to-day human resources operations with a strong focus on compliance, employee relations, talent acquisition, and benefits administration. This role serves as a primary point of contact for district staff regarding HR policies, collective bargaining agreement interpretations, and certification requirements. The ideal candidate pairs a deep understanding of HR best practices with a service-oriented mindset. Key Responsibilities Talent Acquisition & Onboarding: Manage the full-cycle recruitment process using district-specific applicant tracking systems, coordinate interview panels, conduct background and fingerprint checks (per Michigan School Safety legislation), and lead orientation for new instructional and support staff. Compliance & Certification: Monitor and verify Michigan teacher certifications, permits, and continuing education requirements via MOECS, ensuring absolute compliance with Title IX, FMLA, ADA, and FLSA regulations. Labor Relations Support: Assist in administering and interpreting multiple collective bargaining agreements (unions), providing objective guidance to building administrators and staff regarding contract parameters, grievance procedures, and district policies. Benefits & Leaves: Administer employee benefit programs, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; manage tracking and compliance of FMLA, short-term disability, and workers' compensation claims; act as a resource for Office of Retirement Services (ORS) / MPSERS inquiries. Data & Reporting: Maintain accurate employee data and records in the district's ERP/payroll system and assist with mandatory state reporting, including Registry of Educational Personnel (REP) submissions. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a closely related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience); 2–3 years of progressive Human Resources experience; strong tech literacy, including proficiency with HRIS systems, applicant tracking software, and Microsoft Office / Google Workspace; exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills. Preferred: Previous HR experience within a Michigan K-12 public school district or intermediate school district (ISD); familiarity with MPSERS and MOECS; professional certification such as SHRM-CP, PHR, or HRS certification through MSBO.
