Full-Time Faculty, Mathematics (Open Rank) Stevenson University in Stevenson, MD Type: Full-Time Category: Mathematics Full-Time Faculty, Mathematics (Open Rank) Summary This is a 9-month, full-time, campus-based, open rank faculty position in the Applied Mathematics program, School of the Sciences (SOS), with responsibilities for teaching, course development, student advising and mentoring, service to the school, department, and university, and continued scholarship in the field. Teaching responsibilities include 24-30 contact hours per academic year, commensurate with rank. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts; program assessment; and engagement in the life of the university. The Mathematics faculty member fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the SOS Full-Time Faculty Job Description. Rank and title are determined at the time of hire and will be commensurate with education and experience. Full-time faculty in the School of the Sciences are expected to engage in research with undergraduate students and to pursue external funding in support of this research. Department School of the Sciences: Engineering, Math & Physics Education/Experience Doctorate degree in mathematics, with preference given to applied mathematicians and statisticians, with at least two years college level teaching experience and a strong commitment to quality teaching and maintaining an active research program with undergraduates, or equivalent combination of education and experience are required for the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. A minimum of a Master's degree in applied mathematics or mathematics and relevant teaching experience are required for the rank of Lecturer. Knowledge/Skills/Ability Demonstrated knowledge and teaching ability in multiple areas of Mathematics, including statistics, actuarial mathematics, calculus, and mathematics fundamentals. Familiarity with mathematics technology & software. Ability to create inclusive learning experiences that will help students to develop professionally, intellectually, and socially. Ability to engage in curriculum development, planning, implementation, and assessment of student learning. Demonstrated ability to use pedagogies that enhance student engagement. Ability to use classroom and learning management technologies (e.g., Blackboard). Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse constituencies. Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds and practice inclusive pedagogy. Demonstrated student-centered approach to teaching and a commitment to student achievement. Commitment to advising, mentoring, and guiding students and supervising student scholarly activity. Excellent work ethic and organizational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Capability to develop and maintain a professional network to support advising, mentoring, and placement of Applied Mathematics majors in relevant internships and jobs. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in the department and the University. Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Ability to travel between campuses. Ability to work evenings and weekends. Physical Requirements Medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Works in science laboratories and will be exposed to chemicals, biologicals, chemical processes, magnetic field and scientific equipment/instrumentation. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy college environment on a campus with buildings and laboratories separated by some distance. Position requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing and walking. Daily work with computers, monitors, copy machines, and other office equipment is required. Essential Functions Instruction Engage in instructional activity totaling 24-30 contact hours per academic year as assigned by Academic Program Administrator (APA). Teaching responsibilities include time spent in face-to-face courses and in immediate preparation for them; preparing teaching materials; conferring with and providing timely feedback to students on course-related matters; directing individual and group studies; reviewing projects and papers; evaluating assignments, examinations, presentations, and other course work in timely fashion; supervising independent study projects; and submitting mid-term and final grades. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system. Administrative responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis. Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback. Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines. Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week. Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters. Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly. Participate in the assessment activities of the Program, Department, School, and University. Attend meetings and/or workshops related to instruction (e.g., teaching methods, assessment). Implement new teaching methods in existing courses (includes incorporating evidence-based practice). Mentor students in research courses and/or projects related to specialty scholars program requirements. Serve as course coordinator for course(s) as requested. Provide course coordinators and/or Academic Program Administrator with all required course data, as related to course and program assessment and/or accreditation. Evaluate and revise curricula as warranted and/or requested. Conceive and develop new courses to expand academic offerings in Applied Mathematics as requested. Participate in general curriculum development, assessment, and other departmental activities associated with a full-time university teaching position. Service Offer quality advising services to students, including providing recommendations and resources to students on academic, co-curricular, career and/or graduate school matters. Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental and school meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental and school events; and establishing professional relationships to generate placement opportunities for students. University service includes, but is not limited to, service on the University, School and Departmental committees. Engage and participate in the life and work of the program, department, School of the Sciences, and Stevenson University. Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, and Department meetings. Attend all convocations, including convocation and commencement exercises. Participate in faculty governance. Mentor students (e.g., club moderator, mentoring programs âEUR" distinguished from guiding research or academic pursuits) Actively participate on Department, School, and University committees. Participate in recruitment and yield events. Participate in the assessment activities of the Program, Department, School, and University. Mentor and advise new faculty. Serve on Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee(s) as assigned. Scholarship Develop and maintain independent intellectual pursuits, including research, that enhance teaching effectiveness. Develop and maintain an ongoing research program that involves students and leads to presentation and/ or publication in internal and external forums. Engage in continuing professional development and scholarly activities related to the field and pedagogical best practices. Attend professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences. Pursue internal and external funding sources to support scholarly activity.
