Preferred Qualifications:

1. Possesses or qualifies for a Virginia License to teach with specific endorsements in the areas to which assigned. 2. Master's Degree in school counseling or a related field. 3. Background in working with students in alternative or at-risk settings 4. Instructional knowledge of crisis intervention strategies 5. Ability to apply a gradually progressive system of verbal and non-verbal strategies to effectively de-escalate potentially dangerous situations 6. Demonstrates enthusiasm for working with high school children 7. Demonstrates the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, school personnel, parents, and members of the school community

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for providing assistance to all high school students, individually and in groups, regarding high school graduation and completion, including but not limited to analyzing data to identify students or subgroups with potential high school graduation problems; planning, implementing, and tracking individual high school graduation plans; identifying and resolving barriers to graduation; and facilitating career choices and planning. 2. Develops and implements individual intervention strategies to increase the likelihood that at risk students will stay in school and graduate; works with students to develop a graduation and achievement plan to include the best program to meet academic and post-secondary goals; tracks the progress of individual and subpopulations of students as they progress toward graduation and promotes a transition program for 9th graders to successfully adapt to the rigor of high school. 3. Develops partnerships with community organizations to support the goals of the high school graduation initiative. 4. Counsels students individually or in groups on the basis of academics, careers, and life choices. 5. Establishes a rapport with students that is conducive to learning pro-social skills 6. Maintains frequent, meaningful parental communication and develops proactive partnerships between the student/parent to support academic achievement and pro-social behaviors. 7. Monitors student behaviors and makes appropriate instructional modifications to develop responsible thinking/decision-making skills in students. 8. Manages students effectively who may display impulsive behaviors, low self-esteem, and impaired social skills. 9. Mentors identified students to develop the skills and self-esteem necessary for them to exercise meaningful options in the areas of school, leisure, and inter/intra-personal relationships. 10. Guides students as they develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in an academic system. 11. Provides planned occupational information programs for the purpose of introducing students to the world of work. 12. Acts as a positive role model for students and models professional and ethical standards. 13. Maintains current information regarding community services for information and referral purposes. 14. Adheres to guidelines of confidentiality as outlined in federal and state law. 15. Analyzes data for individual students and subgroups such as:

  • State Standardized Tests
  • National Standardized Tests: SAT and ACT
  • Local Records: attendance records, behavior records, records of teacher conferences, records of parent conferences, records of student conferences, child study meeting minutes, grade retention records, and transcripts.

16. Interprets objective data to classroom teachers, parents, and students. 17. Works closely with classroom teachers in planning and implementing group guidance sessions based on the developmental needs of all students. 18. Provides assistance to school support teams. 19. Identifies and implements appropriate interventions for students identified as being at risk. 20. Identifies and links area social agencies with at-risk students and their parents/guardians; provides training to parents of students identified as being at risk of not graduating; provides training to middle school and high school teachers on support measures that work with youth identified as at risk of not graduating and the youth's parents/guardians 21. Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers, school personnel, and the school community to promote and support the mission and goals of the school division and abide by all school division policies and procedures. 22. Acts as the liaison between the school and community agencies in working on student problems. 23. Provides assistance in crisis situations involving individuals or groups and coordinates community resources to support students in crisis. 24. Provides informational workshops to parents in regard to crisis, graduating, and at-risk students. 25. Manages and oversees 504 student learning and accommodation plans. 26. Participates in meaningful and continuous professional development that promotes student learning. 27. Conducts and analyzes ongoing formative and summative evaluation data of program effectiveness such as:

  • What interventions were most utilized in achievement plans created for each at-risk student.
  • Number and percent of at-risk students who met part or all of their goals in their academic plan.
  • Number and percent of identified at-risk students in the school compared to the total school population, and rationale for why the number/percent is higher or lower than the state average.

28. Performs other duties as assigned.
