Description


Under general direction, to plan, coordinate, inspect, and lead a project crew and other Parks staff in the repair, maintenance, construction, and alteration of park facilities within the County Regional Park System; to develop cost estimates for feasibility and make recommendations; to track projects and their related costs; and to serve as a technical resource for semi-skilled and skilled crafts related work.

The Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for Park Maintenance Crew Chief. The Park Maintenance Crew Chief leads the Department's Projects Unit comprised of four (4) Park Maintenance Craftworkers and is responsible for training and leading Crafts Workers to department standards and overseeing projects such as restroom renovation, bridge construction, facility repairs, and other various construction projects. The Park Maintenance Crew Chief is a subject matter expert for the Parks Visitor Service and Facilities Division in these areas and plays a critical role in maintaining park facilities and collaborating with Maintenance and Ranger Operations of County Parks providing expertise, support, and project management for park units and small department-wide construction projects, including responding to emergency repair requests ensuring that park facilities remain accessible and safe.

Typical Tasks


The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Leads Park Maintenance Crafts Workers and other Parks staff in a variety of skilled and semi-skilled level craft tasks for the construction and repair of Park facilities, such as repairing and construction of pedestrian and vehicle bridges and water pump systems, bathroom repairs/remodels, park residence building renovations, building office remodels, build/rebuild outside wall structure stays/retaining walls and irrigation systems, and other miscellaneous work involving plumbing, culverts, drainage ditches, slope stabilization, pavement maintenance, and concrete foundation/slabs;
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and plans;
  • Trains workers in trades and crafts applications and safety practices;
  • Enforces safety for everyone around job sites;
  • Develops cost estimates for feasibility and makes recommendations;
  • Tracks projects and their related costs;
  • Performs administrative duties related to supplies/materials, timekeeping, training, safety, record-keeping, research, and reports;
  • Plans and prepares budgets for construction projects;
  • Serves as a technical resource for crafts workers, coworkers, management, and outside entities;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.
Employment Standards


Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent;

Three (3) years of journey-level trades experience within a government agency and/or the private sector.

Special Requirements
  • Possession of a Standard First Aid and CPR certificate before completion of the probationary period.
  • Any licenses and/or certificates required to perform the typical tasks listed that are required by State, Federal, and other governmental agencies.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of carpentry, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, and masonry;
  • Techniques used for the repair and maintenance of parks facilities and infrastructure;
  • The safe and proper operation of related tools and equipment;
  • Project estimation, tracking, and budgeting;
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures;
  • Health and safety principles, practices, and codes for maintaining a safe work environment;
  • English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting;
  • Common computer systems and applications;
  • Safe driving rules and practices.
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, monitor, and track construction and maintenance projects;
  • Schedule projects and order supplies/materials needed to complete small construction projects in a timely manner;
  • Plan, assign, train, and lead the work of others;
  • Estimate project cost for feasibility and make recommendations;
  • Read and interpret blueprints and plans;
  • Troubleshoot work problems as they arise;
  • Track projects and their costs;
  • Maintain records pertaining to attendance, work orders, projects, trainings, and reports;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Serve as a technical resource to department staff, contractors, the public, and outside agency staff;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
Physical Requirements
  • Work under the following conditions using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): dust, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, cramped quarters, and inadequate lighting;
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, special events, or other irregular hours;
  • Must conform to departmental uniform standards;
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks that require the ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb, twist, push/pull, lift, drag and carry materials and objects;
  • Lift and carry materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds;


  • Work outside and under adverse working conditions, including the ability to walk on steep and/or uneven terrain.
