Unit Secretary/Patient Care Tech - Multispecialty Telemetry FT, Days

Job Summary The Unit Secretary / Patient Care Tech position is a hybrid role that primarily acts as a unit secretary and will also perform basic nursing assistant duties as needed. This position supports patients and the care team on the assigned nursing unit with appropriate training and clinical competency validation. The role works within scope of practice and under close/general supervision of licensed personnel. Unit Secretary Perform general reception duties at the nurse’s station, respond to patient calls, and assist patients, family, visitors and staff in a kind, professional and efficient manner. Provide administrative and clerical support including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards and organizing downtime forms. Manage ordering, stocking and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager; monitor supplies, order as needed and maintain unit supply rooms. Coordinate the maintenance of a safe, clean and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards. Monitor designated patient safety systems for alerts and notify the appropriate RN immediately. Patient Care Tech Provide direct patient care within scope of practice as directed by providers and licensed staff, including activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and transferring. Assist with admission of patients to the unit by preparing rooms, greeting patients, and orienting them to the unit. Assist with walking, turning, positioning, ambulating patients and with removal and reapplication of compression devices. Collect data including vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, blood pressure, and basic sterile specimens; document fluid intake and output. Perform point‑of‑care testing as trained and delegated by the RN; report lab values to the RN. Perform healthcare procedures delegated by the RN, including sterile and non‑sterile soaks, dressings, perineal care, ostomy care, nasal cannula, phlebotomy, EKGs and incentive spirometry. Insert and remove straight catheters (or remove Foley catheters) with appropriate training and competency validation. Assist with fall prevention interventions and patient restraints as delegated. Assist with transporting patients for diagnostic studies and floor assignments. Document comfort and non‑pharmacological pain management measures; chart all observations and clinical data in the EMR. Maintain appropriate medical equipment and supplies, returning unused items to other units as needed. Clean and stock carts, rooms, hallways and kitchens; change linens as necessary. Consult with supervisor and keep them informed of unit activities, needs and problems related to patient care. Follow department, unit, hospital policies, procedures, and quality, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Help ensure smooth operation of the nursing unit or facility. Participate in process improvement initiatives. Serve as a role model and mentor other members of the care team. Practice safe and efficient use of supplies. Attend department and organization meetings and complete annual compliance training. Maintain a clean, safe, therapeutic and caring environment for patients, families, and staff. Assume responsibility for personal professional development and continuing education. Perform patient observer duties as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory/Management Responsibilities This is a non‑management job that reports to a supervisor, manager, director or executive. Minimum Requirements Education: Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman or nursing fundamentals course is preferred. Experience: No experience required. Preferred experience: Experience as a nursing assistant, PCT, MA, EMT, paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotist, medical corpsman, or nursing student. Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses Licensure, certification, or registration in the relevant field of training is preferred.
