Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) – Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group At Houston Methodist the Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position is responsible for performing highly technical examinations and treatments, communicating appropriately, and carrying out delegated medical‑assistant level tasks under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Nurse. The role supports patient care and services for assigned patient populations, oversees scope of practice (e.g., Hand Hygiene Validator, EMR super‑user), assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, dressing changes, and performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government standards and company policies. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Education High School diploma or equivalent education (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post‑secondary education, etc.) Experience Five years of medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline. Licenses and Certifications Required Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. Preferred CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ACA). Skills and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary for safe performance of the assigned job, assessed through ongoing competency evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English for essential job functions. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus. Knowledgeable about medical practice, patient care, and assistance with examinations, diagnostics, and treatment procedures. Creates and maintains accurate medical records and clinical quality assurance. Shows a learning attitude, good reasoning, and judgment in problem‑solving. Provides safe, patient‑centered, compassionate, and competent care. Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work‑related purposes. Completes required continuous training, maintains current certifications, and documents education. Builds effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and coworkers. Works well in team situations. Possesses a sound understanding of the patient population and its clinical disease process. Demonstrates advanced assessment competencies appropriate for the level of practice. Essential Functions People Models and promotes a positive work environment, leading problem resolution and facilitating teamwork. Collaborates with the interprofessional healthcare team, actively communicating and reporting patient care information. Serves as a clinical preceptor and resource, guiding colleagues and providing structured feedback. Service Provides care to patients under direct supervision of a physician, RN, or clinic leadership. Completes pre‑visit planning workflow, gathers vital signs, medication review, and medical/social history. Documents all diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures in the EMR. Arranges follow‑up to ensure compliance with recommendations and promotes MyChart utilization. Coordinates care with hospitals, EDs, consulting physicians, and community resources. Models behaviors and skills to improve patient satisfaction scores. Quality / Safety Reports patient observations, conditions, and problems to physician and/or nurse. Recognizes abnormal clinical findings and responds appropriately. Accurately performs routine tests (EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, pregnancy tests). Sterilizes instruments, prepares, cleans, and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Finance Efficiently uses resources and manages inventory in exam rooms. Independently manages time, prioritizes tasks, and coordinates colleagues to meet departmental demands. Growth / Innovation Develops team skills and improves performance through professional development activities. Contributes innovative solutions to performance improvement initiatives. Maintains an updated development plan.
