Observation Unit Position Part Time Shift: PM/N Shift (7p-7a) Sign-On Bonus: 20,000.00 Job Summary Provides operational shift oversight, delegates care to staff, facilitates timely patient admission, transfer and discharge. Provides ongoing leadership, support and guidance to all staff and presents a positive image and attitude. Promotes and restores patients' health by completing the nursing process and collaborates with other healthcare team members. Uses a systematic critical‑thinking approach to guide data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual and potential health problems through activities such as health teaching, the provision of care, supportive and restorative care and or support of a peaceful death. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission, vision, strategic imperatives and standards of Lexington Medical Center (LMC), American Nurses Association Standards and South Carolina Nurse Practice Act. Essential Functions Establish positive rapport with patient and family. Promote patient’s independence by setting care goals and providing education. Serve as patient/family advocate. Maintain continuity among nursing teams by documenting accurately and timely; communicating actions, irregularities and ongoing needs. Use systematic critical‑thinking approach to guide data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, intervention and evaluation. Identify, synthesize and interpret sources of data using reasonable clinical judgment to respond to dynamic situations promptly and effectively. Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential. Use ethical decision‑making processes and advocate for acceptable patient outcomes. Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against goals and making necessary adjustments; follow hospital, pharmacy and nursing division standards. Resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies. Participate in process/performance improvement activities utilizing evidence‑based practice. Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations; call for assistance from support personnel. Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control policies, medication administration/storage procedures and controlled substance regulations. Document all patient care activities accurately and timely. Provide safe, appropriate, quality care and support to patients and family members. Hold team members accountable for standards of care, policy and procedures, bedside reporting, etc. Serve as a teacher, coach and mentor to staff. Contribute to development and revision of unit standards. Exercise efficient conflict resolution and problem‑solving skills. Serve as staff leader related to process/performance improvement initiatives. Duties & Responsibilities Foster interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Support shared governance activities by serving on a unit or hospital‑based committee. Maintain positive rapport with the healthcare team and demonstrate strong collaboration skills. Collaborate with instructors from affiliating agencies to assure continuity of patient care and positive learning experiences for students. Provide feedback and insight regarding unit operations and employee performance to the Nurse Manager. Serve as a resource and role model for all members of the patient care team. Recognize and respond appropriately to complex situations. Participate in and provide input for patient care conferences and discharge planning conferences. Coordinate timely patient throughput (admissions, discharges, transfers) and facilitate smooth transitions of care. Negotiate for nursing resources to meet patient care needs. Ensure patient care assignments are based on acuity and skill level. Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions and maintaining inventories. Appropriately utilize all nursing supplies and equipment. Demonstrate effective teamwork skills; maintain cooperative relationships by communicating information, responding to requests and building rapport. Promptly respond to all communication devices. Assist in performing and documenting environmental checks as required by LMC policy. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications and participating in professional societies. Maintain required certifications and earn a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually in specialty. Complete medical screening exams and other competency requirements as specified. Ensure hazardous waste is handled and disposed of per regulations; complete RCRA training within 6 months of hire and annually thereafter. Perform all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Minimum Years of Experience: 2 Years of experience in areas of specialty within the past 5 years Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): Consideration given to those with ADN or Diploma nursing degree enrolled in RN to BS or RN to MS program; expected degree completion within 12 months of hire. Required Certifications/Licensure: National nursing certification in specialty at time of hire or within 6 months; Current RN license in South Carolina. Required Training: None.
