Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic

Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic performs and supports a wide range of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, and fabrication tasks to keep production operations running safely and efficiently. This role focuses on general repairs, installation, and preventive maintenance on processing equipment while ensuring compliance with safety standards and plant regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and repair on a variety of production and processing equipment.
• Connect and disconnect motors safely and correctly in accordance with established procedures.
• Operate test instruments and tools such as drill presses, saws, grinders, and related shop equipment.
• Perform basic stick welding and torch welding to support repair and fabrication needs.
• Conduct preventive maintenance on production equipment to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Install new equipment as required, including mechanical and electrical components.
• Oversee the daily activities of hourly Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers, providing direction and support.
• Maintain compliance with all equipment safety standards and ensure safe operating conditions.
• Promote safety awareness and good housekeeping practices throughout the maintenance and production areas.
• Ensure adherence to plant rules, procedures, and regulations in all maintenance activities.
• Use troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to diagnose equipment issues and implement effective solutions.
• Plan and organize maintenance tasks to meet production schedules and operational priorities.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of a high school diploma; completion of technical school coursework is preferred.
• 3–5 years of electrical and/or mechanical maintenance experience.
• 2–3 years of experience in a processing environment is preferred.
• Strong mechanical and/or electrical skills with hands-on maintenance experience.
• Ability to connect and disconnect motors safely and accurately.
• Proficiency in operating test instruments and shop tools such as drill presses, saws, and grinders.
• Ability to perform basic stick welding and torch welding.
• Experience with preventive maintenance on production and processing equipment.
• Good written and verbal communication skills for documenting work and interacting with team members.
• Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to resolve equipment and process issues.
• Good planning and organization skills to manage multiple maintenance tasks effectively.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working as a maintenance technician in an industrial or processing environment.
• Ability to perform fabrication work to support equipment repair and modification.
• Familiarity with processing operations and production equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to oversee and guide hourly Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers.
• Comfort working weekend shifts and adjusting to different schedules as needed.
• Technical school training or vocational education in maintenance, electrical, or mechanical fields is a plus.

Work Environment

This role is based in a production facility with a strong tobacco smell in one department and a strong flavoring smell in another, which can be noticeable throughout the shift. When production is running, the air can be somewhat cloudy or dusty, though described as not excessively heavy. You will work around processing equipment, motors, wiring, and fabrication tools such as drill presses, saws, grinders, and welding equipment. The position follows a weekend shift schedule: Monday 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday off, Thursday 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Initial training is conducted on a Monday–Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for approximately two weeks before transitioning to the weekend shift.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilson, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
