Bus Aide

The School City of Hobart is seeking Bus Aides. Positions are filled on an as-needed basis. The Bus Aide supports the Bus Driver in transporting students to and from school and related activities in a prompt and safe manner. The Bus Aide supports student safety, assists with loading and unloading, monitors student behavior, helps maintain bus readiness, and responds appropriately during drills or emergencies.

Key responsibilities include working as a team with the Bus Driver to support safe and timely transportation of students, assisting students, parents, and school personnel with safe loading and unloading, attending to students on the bus, monitoring student behavior, assisting with daily bus readiness, and supporting bus safety drills, evacuation drills, and emergency response procedures.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, at least 18 years old, ability to communicate clearly and professionally, ability to follow written and oral instructions, ability to physically move through the bus and assist with student safety equipment and mobility needs, and ability to maintain composure and respond appropriately in emergencies. Preferred experience includes working with children and supporting student transportation, student supervision, or special needs/mobility assistance.

Salary and benefits are defined in the School City of Hobart Transportation Department Staff Handbook. Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing steps, maintaining balance while riding in and moving within a school bus, and moving quickly in the bus aisle during student loading, unloading, and emergency situations. Work environment includes exposure to traffic, moving vehicles, noise, vibration, fumes or exhaust, uneven surfaces, and varying weather and temperature conditions.
