About the Role Magpie by Jen Shoop is seeking an exceptional Senior Editor to serve as a close editorial partner to our Founder and Editor-in-Chief. You will help us preserve what makes Magpie distinctive – our voice, aesthetic, and carefully-cultivated intimacy with and usefulness to our readership – while helping our publishing operations run smoothly. Your primary writing focus will be shopping-related content, and a substantial and ongoing portion of the role will involve personally drafting, rewriting, and editing copy.Alongside that work, you will progressively assume responsibility for editorial planning, workflow, and publication quality, giving the Founder more space for creative work. You will work closely with the Founder during the initial ramp, gaining greater editorial independence as well as responsibility for contributors and specialists as fluency in the Magpie voice and publishing process develops. The balance of writing and operational responsibilities will evolve as publishing priorities and available support ebb and flow. Magpie operates with a human-authored editorial model. Published editorial and commerce work must reflect original human judgment, research, and authorship. Team members may not use generative AI to create Magpie content, or submit Magpie or third-party confidential or copyrighted material to AI tools, except for uses specifically approved by the company. What You’ll Do Draft and edit shopping posts/modules. Use product selections, merchandising concepts, and structured notes from the Founder and Shopping Editor to craft publication-ready stories. This will involve drafting, substantially rewriting, line editing, and/or copy-editing. Be the gatekeeper for Magpie’s voice and standards. Bring careful judgment to language, framing, accuracy, and reader usefulness across the website, newsletters, and selected marketing channels. Run the editorial workflow. Progressively own the calendar, briefs, deadlines, and handoffs, coordinating with the Shopping Editor, production support, designers, email specialists, and contributors. Oversee publication quality. Ensure copy, imagery, links, disclosures, and presentation meet Magpie’s standards. Work with production specialists on execution and make CMS corrections when needed. Improve the publishing program. Use reader behavior, affiliate performance, search demand, seasonality, and cultural trends to propose new ideas and refresh published content. Build editorial capacity. Strengthen workflows and, as the role develops, assume greater responsibility for managing contributors and specialists and supporting new editorial programs. What We’re Looking For Approximately 5–8 years of experience in digital editorial, magazine publishing, or an equivalent body of work. Exceptional writing, substantive editing, and sharp copy-editing skills, with the ability to turn product curations and editorial direction into polished shopping and lifestyle content. Sophisticated judgment regarding voice, tone, structure, and reader usefulness, alongside strong aesthetic instincts. Experience managing editorial calendars and publishing workflows, with stellar organization, communication, and follow-through. Familiarity with WordPress or a comparable CMS, plus a working understanding of SEO, newsletters, analytics, and cross-channel publishing.Experience with Canva a plus. Comfort collaborating closely with a founder and using performance information without compromising editorial judgment. Experience directing freelancers or production specialists strongly preferred. Magpie is committed to evaluating candidates based on relevant skills, experience, judgment, and the quality of their work. Benefits and time off Health coverage: Magpie pays 80% of the employee-only premium for the selected base medical plan; employees pay the balance and additional dependent premiums. Retirement: Company contribution of 3% of eligible compensation, regardless of employee contributions. Paid time off: 15 vacation days, seven separate sick/safe days, nine company holidays, and three floating holidays annually, with additional provisions as required by law. Family and medical leave: After six months of employment, four weeks of parental leave following birth, adoption, or foster placement, plus up to two weeks for a serious personal health condition or family caregiving. Both are paid at full base salary, separate from other paid time off, with a combined six-week maximum in a rolling 12-month period. Payments may be coordinated with state benefits; statutory rights apply independently. Q4 vacation and floating holidays require advance planning and approval around peak publishing dates.
