Low-Barrier Shelter Volunteer

OPCS is seeking volunteer support for our low-barrier congregate shelter, Casa Del Pueblo!

This role supports lunch service at our shelter by preparing and serving food, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, and assisting clients with basic needs. Ideal volunteers can come in twice a week (but once a week is okay too - let us know your availability below)! Volunteer shifts are available M/W, Tu/Th, or F/Sun, with each shift lasting from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. There is some flexibility to adjust hours and days. A minimum three-month commitment is required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Lunch Service: Prepare and serve basic meals (sack lunches, simple crockpot dishes, burritos, etc.) for shelter clients. At the end of the meal period, tidy the kitchen/dining area, including storing leftover food, washing dishes, wiping down counters, removing trash, and sweeping floors.
• Shelter Support: Provide general support including interacting with clients, responding to requests, supporting the shelter staff, and assisting with other tasks as assigned.
• Volunteers will work under the guidance of the Hospitality Specialist and/or Shelter Monitors.

Qualifications:

• Openness to working in a low-barrier shelter environment for unhoused individuals.
• Compassionate and empathetic attitude towards shelter guests.
• Basic understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively with shelter staff and other volunteers.
• Ability to maintain client confidentiality (following HIPAA guidelines).
• Good communication skills.
• Reliability and punctuality.
• Must be 18 years or older.

Orientation & Training: Volunteers in this role must attend volunteer orientation and training (4-8 hours, in total).
