Police Officer – Mountain Home VA Healthcare System This position is a Police Officer at the Mountain Home VA Healthcare System in Knoxville, TN. The officer will perform full‑range police duties, including law and rule enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction. Responsibilities Maintain order to protect life and property. Take complaints and interview witnesses. Secure crime scenes, respond to emergencies, gather information, and prepare reports. Conduct routine patrols, traffic control, and traffic accident investigations. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement (09/30/2026). The announcement is open and continuous until June 30, 2026, with an initial cutoff for referral of eligible applications on 5/18/2026. Specialized experience (GS‑06 level): One year of specialized experience in an occupational area involving law enforcement, security, or related work. Experience must include maintaining order, taking complaints, interviewing witnesses, securing crime scenes, responding to emergencies, gathering information, preparing reports, routine patrol, traffic control, or traffic accident investigations. Security guard or corrections officer experience is generally not qualifying. Additional requirements: Valid, unrestricted state driver’s license and safe driving record. Must pass a physical examination and meet medical requirements for moderate to arduous physical exertion. Must possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act and complete VA‑approved training courses. Must pass a psychological examination and be verified by a character investigation. Must qualify for a firearm and maintain certification, and possess an expandable Straight Baton. Conditions of Employment Attend an 8‑10 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Undergo a medical examination; duties involve moderate to arduous physical exertion; vision, hearing, and color discrimination must meet standards. Undergo a psychological examination; medical conditions will not automatically disqualify unless they preclude duties. Undergo a character investigation for selected candidates. Qualify for a firearm, maintain a valid driver’s license, and pass annual physical and psychosocial assessments. Lautenberg Amendment Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position.
