Summary Provides care in the ambulatory setting directed towards meeting the psychosocial and physical needs of the surgical patient. Communicates with the physicians about the patient’s clinical condition regarding the planned surgical procedure. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative, is a self‑starter and strives to maintain steady level of productivity. (Is compatible, supportive and a team player.) Communicates on behalf of the patient (patient advocate); care provided reflects the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Ability to perform a head‑to‑toe assessment of all patient populations and perform reassessments per facility policy. Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, diseases/surgical conditions, and good judgment. Identifies physical symptoms and changes, reports changes to the surgeon/anesthesiologist, and initiates appropriate actions. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or health‑care errors. Organizes and manages nursing activities with respect for the needs of the patient and their families, and for the needs of the hospital and staff. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and families. Utilizes the five medication rights and reduces potential for medication errors. Knowledge of medications, IV fluids and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition. Uses medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures, and assists physicians in performing procedures. Assesses and reassesses pain, utilizes appropriate pain‑management techniques, and educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Formulates an individualized plan of care, evaluates for effectiveness, and formulates a teaching plan based on identified patient learning needs. Family is included in teaching from pre‑op to discharge. Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance consistently. Utilizes Universal Protocol (time‑out procedure, patient identification). Ensures completion of documentation including H/P, consents, hand‑off communication tools, medication administration, pre‑anesthetic questionnaire, medication reconciliation and allergies. Knows cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, notifies physician of changes, and treats appropriately based on protocol. Able to perform 12‑Lead EKG. Performs waived or moderate complexity testing per clinical laboratory and unit policy. Interprets results and takes appropriate action. Coordinates and supervises patient care and communicates clearly to charge nurse or supervisor, co‑workers, and physicians. Shows flexibility, organization, and ability to function under stressful situations. Treats patients and families with respect and dignity and maintains an environment that provides safety and security, practising good guest relations. Maintains effective communication within the department and with other departments for an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs. Meets current documentation standards and completes within the shift. Charge Nurse Responsibilities Makes daily patient assignments, monitors the surgery schedule and daily unit progress, and reports changes to involved departments. Supports and oversees unit staff, monitors staffing efficiency, delegates duties, and monitors daily time sheets. Provides and controls supplies and equipment needed for successful operation of the department, directing inventory control. Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment and supplies to ensure good working conditions. Communicates pertinent issues to the supervisor. Provides orientation to new staff members and assists in the evaluation process. Promotes the hospital’s mission, values, and goals. Utilizes initiative, maintains steady level of productivity, and completes assigned projects on due date. Might rotate after‑hours clinical on‑call supervisory coverage. Is knowledgeable of lab procedures and laboratory equipment. Participates in QA/PI activities and communicates results to staff. Completes duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager. Completes annual education requirements and unit in‑services. Maintains regulatory requirements. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Wears identification while on duty and uses computerized punch‑time system correctly. Attends annual review and department in‑services as scheduled. Attends monthly staff meetings or reads minutes. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital and department focus statement. Promotes professional growth of subordinates by sharing knowledge and directing them to resources. Assists other staff members in performing any duty that enhances patient care. Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification Requirements (CR.1c) At a minimum the program direct‑care staff must have four (4) hours of education specific to the program scope, initially and at least annually thereafter. (CR.1e) Staff must possess adaptability to processes related to up‑to‑date best practices, collaboration between departments, compliance with protocols, communication, cooperation, and exceptional customer service. Onboarding Milestones (Within 90 days of hire) Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification. Compliance with program education requirements. Completed department‑specific competencies. Regulatory Requirements Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current registered nurse licensure in Louisiana. Two years nursing experience preferred. Current BLS certification. Current ACLS certification. Current PALS certification or obtain within 6 months of hire. Skills Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing. Basic computer knowledge. Physical Demands The physical demands include talk and hear, active tasks, repetitive motions, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping all day, and frequently lifting or moving items weighing over 100 pounds. #J-18808-Ljbffr
