EHS Specialist

EHS SpecialistThe EHS Specialist will drive the day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement of Environmental, Health and Safety programs at our San Antonio facility.This is a hands-on role suited to an EHS professional who is comfortable working independently in a research laboratory and scientific manufacturing environment. You will bring experience supporting laboratory, research, life sciences, or similarly regulated scientific operations.The EHS Specialist will be responsible for building a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental and occupational health and safety requirements. The role covers chemical safety and hygiene, hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, emergency preparedness, incident investigation, and employee EHS training. The role partners closely with the site's Biosafety Specialist on any overlapping hazards.Key ResponsibilitiesEHS Program ManagementDevelop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs, policies, procedures, and standards for the San Antonio facilities.Serve as Flyttr's US primary subject matter expert for environmental, health, and occupational safety matters.Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.Establish EHS objectives, metrics, and reporting processes to monitor performance and identify opportunities for improvement.Conduct routine workplace inspections, audits, risk assessments, and job hazard analyses.Partner with site leadership, laboratory teams, engineering, facilities, and other functions to integrate EHS considerations into daily operations.Partner with Flyttr's Biosafety Compliance Officer to ensure coordinated coverage of chemical and biological hazards, including joint incident response where applicable.Promote a proactive safety culture where employees understand their responsibilities and feel empowered to identify and address potential hazards.Support other Flyttr sites within the US with EHS support as required.Laboratory & Chemical SafetyDevelop and maintain laboratory and chemical safety programs appropriate for scientific and technical operations with the support of the Biosafety Compliance Officer.Ensure the site has appropriate Chemical Hygiene Plan and applicable laboratory safety requirements, support and maintain these.Oversee chemical inventory management, Hazard Communication, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labeling, storage, segregation, and disposal practices.Conduct laboratory risk assessments and support the safe introduction of new chemicals, processes, equipment, and experimental activities.Establish appropriate PPE requirements and safe work practices based on documented hazard assessments.Provide guidance to laboratory and technical employees on chemical, physical, biological, and other workplace hazards.Support biological safety practices where applicable to site operations and in coordination with the Biosafety Compliance Officer.Occupational SafetyManage and maintain EHS activities such as hazard communication, electrical safety, PPE, respiratory protection, ergonomics, fall protection, and other applicable occupational safety programs.Conduct job hazard analyses and risk assessments for processes, equipment, maintenance activities, and facility operations.Partner with engineering and operations teams during equipment installation, commissioning, process changes, and facility modifications to identify and mitigate EHS risks.Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventative actions.Monitor safety trends and use data to proactively reduce workplace injuries, incidents, and near misses.Partner with the People Manager to ensure full compliance with safety training, and develop and deliver training where required.Environmental ComplianceManage hazardous/chemical waste compliance including proper handling, storage, documentation, transportation, and disposal.Monitor for any future environmental compliance programs and requirements, e.g. air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and other environmental obligations.Ensure proper handling, storage, documentation, transportation, and disposal of hazardous and regulated waste.Maintain required environmental records, permits, reports, and regulatory documentation.Coordinate with approved environmental and waste management vendors.Support spill prevention planning and response.Support environmental permitting and regulatory reporting as the facility and operations expand.Qualifications & ExperienceRequiredBachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or a related scientific or technical discipline.Approximately 3-5 years of progressive EHS experience, preferably within a laboratory, life sciences, chemical, or similarly regulated scientific environment.Demonstrated experience supporting EHS programs in a laboratory or scientific setting.Strong working knowledge of OSHA requirements and occupational safety principles.Experience with chemical safety, hazard communication, SDS management, chemical storage, laboratory safety, and hazardous waste.Experience conducting risk assessments, workplace inspections, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.Experience developing EHS policies, procedures, training programs, and compliance documentation.Ability to work effectively with scientists, leadership, contractors, and regulatory authorities.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work independently and take ownership of EHS programs in a growing and evolving organization.PreferredExperience working in biotechnology, life sciences, or another science-based organization.Knowledge of EPA, TCEQ, DOT, RCRA, OSHA, and other environmental and occupational safety regulatory frameworks relevant to site operations.Experience supporting hazardous waste and environmental permitting requirements.Experience with Chemical Hygiene Plans, or biological safety practices.Experience supporting a new facility, facility expansion, or scaling a research or manufacturing operation.Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or equivalent is desirable but not required.Behavioral RequirementsCommitment to, and passion for, the Flyttr
