Assistant Manager

Houghton Building Supply is looking for a hands-on Assistant Manager in Houghton, Michigan . As Assistant Manager, you help keep the store running smoothly, customers well served, and employees supported. Working closely with the Store Manager, you help lead daily operations, build strong customer relationships, and keep the team moving forward. WHAT WE OFFER.

$25.00 - $35.00 per hour based on your knowledge and experience. Company provided health insurance including dental and vision coverage. 401(k) retirement plan with 6% company match. Paid time off. Full-time position with occasional Saturday’s (8am – 1pm) as needed.

WHAT YOUR DAYS LOOK LIKE.

Help keep daily store, sales-counter, and front-end operations running smoothly. Support sales, margin, expense, and customer-service goals. Coordinate schedules, assign work, coach employees, and help train the team. Handle cash procedures, point-of-sale transactions, paperwork, and basic reporting. Build strong relationships with contractors and business customers. Step in to resolve customer concerns, special requests, and day-to-day challenges. Look for ways to improve counter processes, accuracy, and efficiency. Keep merchandising, pricing, and product displays accurate and organized. Help maintain a safe, professional workplace where company policies are followed.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR.

Experience in retail, hardware, a lumberyard, building supply, or a similar customer-focused business is strongly preferred. Experience leading, training, or supervising employees is a plus. Strong customer-service, communication, and relationship-building skills. Comfort using point-of-sale systems, computers, and basic business reports. The ability to stay organized, accurate, and calm while juggling several priorities. Building-materials or construction knowledge is helpful—but curiosity and a willingness to learn matter too. A dependable, approachable leadership style and a genuine interest in helping customers and co-workers succeed.
