Summary Employee serves as Maintenance Mechanic within the Facilities Management Service – Engineering Branch at the Orlando VAHCS. The employee is responsible as WS‑4749‑10 Maintenance Mechanic Foreman. Typical work assignments include the visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for and to perform repair work on maintenance trades throughout the Orlando VAHCS main campus, offsite business offices, and outpatient clinics. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 06/04/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Physical Requirements Employee must frequently work in hot and humid confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with the utility plant. Tasks include climbing ladders, bending, crouching, stooping, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, and working in confined areas. The employee must lift parts and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs and may be required to lift equipment weighing 60 lbs or more. The role requires being on one’s feet for extended periods, standing, walking, or staging materials. Physical fitness is required. Working Conditions The work is performed indoors and outdoors, sometimes in severe weather, exposed to noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil greases, hot steam piping, and extreme temperatures. Employees may be exposed to cuts, bruises, toxic fumes, gases, acids, burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches, and molten solder. Duties Ensure operation, maintenance, and repair of all building and facility maintenance aspects. Employ a variety of trade practices including woodworking, masonry, pipe fitting, carpentry, locksmithing, sign making, general mechanic, and plumbing. Make and repair high‑grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture, orthopedic devices, and decorative woodwork for office and medical use. Maintain, repair, alter, and construct exterior and interior surfaces and structures using brick, block, and stone. Install, modify, and repair high‑pressure piping systems and equipment, including steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators. Apply graphic arts techniques to produce signs, posters, and displays for interior and exterior use. Select appropriate locking devices and parts to meet security objectives.
