Scientist II
$115k - $135kMultiply Labs, Inc.
Note: This role is currently part of our general interest pool. We are not actively recruiting for it at this time, but we are reviewing submissions. If a strong fit emerges and the role is prioritized, a member of our team will reach out. Thank you for your interest in Multiply Labs. Join the Future of Robotic Biomanufacturing! Multiply Labs is a robotics company on a mission to solve a significant bottleneck in modern medicine: the manufacturing of life‑saving advanced biologics, from gene and cell therapies to antibodies and more. Today, these therapies are produced through manual, labor‑intensive processes. Costs are extremely high—often $500K-$2M per patient—limiting access to only a small fraction of those who need them. As product complexity increases and the cost of failure and scientific labor rises, the industry is shifting toward automation. Robotics and AI are making automated biologics manufacturing feasible, reliable, and economically scalable. We believe the future of biomanufacturing is robotic - closed, automated, and scalable - ensuring critical therapeutics are accessible to every patient who needs them. Why This Matters We don’t just build robots; we build the infrastructure for the next generation of biologics manufacturing. Our technology allows biopharma companies to scale production without redesigning their science, drastically lowering regulatory hurdles and bringing costs down to a level where these treatments can actually reach patients. About this Role We are seeking a highly motivated scientist who will contribute significantly to the advancement and validation of our automated processes. This role primarily involves hands‑on laboratory work, where you will directly contribute to improving the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of our robotic systems. This will provide you with a deep, intimate understanding of the intricacies of our technology. Beyond the lab, you will also serve as a key Multiply Labs representative during system deployments at customer sites. This will involve working directly with clients to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of our robotic solutions, offering an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in real‑world settings and to contribute directly to customer success. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Experiment Planning and Execution: Assist in experiment design and execution, perform statistical analysis, and present data. Cluster Deployment Support: Act as the onsite biology team representative during the deployment of robotic systems at both domestic and international customer sites. This includes providing assistance and training to customer personnel on automated processes. Cross‑functional Collaboration: Work with other teams in improving and implementing automated processes. Laboratory Maintenance: Assist with routine laboratory tasks, such as maintaining cell cultures, equipment, inventory, and documentation. Minimum Qualifications Degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, biomedical engineering): Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant experience; OR Masters’ degree and 2+ years of relevant experience Proficiency in an experimental biology laboratory, including: Hands‑on experience performing experiments Data analysis and interpretation of results Ability to plan and execute experiments independently Expertise in common laboratory techniques (e.g., cell culture, media preparation) Familiarity with standard safety procedures and sterile techniques (e.g., proper PPE, aseptic handling) Effective troubleshooting of experimental issues and technical failures Proficiency in aseptic techniques: Working efficiently within a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) Proper handling of sterile reagents and supplies Routine visual and microscopic monitoring to prevent microbial and cross‑contamination of cell lines Proficiency in human blood processing, including: Experience in handling and manipulating whole blood or apheresis‑collected components (e.g., PBMCs, stem cells) Post‑collection processing for downstream cell expansion protocols (e.g., isolating specific cell populations, immediate culture initiation, or cell cryopreservation) Proficiency in T cell isolation from peripheral blood or apheresis products using both positive and negative selection methods, coupled with experience in T cell activation and expansion protocols Proficiency using Google Workspace for managing large collaborative data trackers (Sheets) and creating formal technical reports (Docs/Slides) Proficiency using GraphPad Prism to independently perform advanced statistical tests (e.g., ANOVA) and generate publication‑quality data figures Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly convey complex scientific information (including customer processes and technical requirements) to both scientific audiences and non‑scientific internal staff to ensure alignment and effective collaboration Flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing priorities and schedules Organizational skills, time management, administrative, and data recording skills Ability to prioritize tasks, multi‑task, and coordinate work tasks with others and meet multiple deadlines Ability to travel to international and domestic customer sites as needed Ability to stand for long periods of time and move comfortably in confined systems within our robotic systems (~2.5m x 1m, with further restrictions depending on robot location) Preferred Qualifications Hands‑on experience working within a GxP (GLP/GMP/GCP) laboratory environment, with a proven ability to consistently follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain meticulous records. Familiarity with FDA and EMA regulations and guidance concerning documentation, data integrity, and quality control systems relevant to the development and manufacturing process. Proficiency in the operation, programming, and troubleshooting of laboratory automation equipment (e.g., liquid handlers) and closed, automated cell therapy manufacturing platforms (e.g., CliniMACS, Rotea). Physical & Working Conditions Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (e.g., equipment, materials) and lift up to 5 pounds overhead. Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time while performing lab tasks, operating specialized equipment, using a microscope, and analyzing data/preparing presentations; this includes the potential need to stand inside a robotic cluster for maintenance or intervention when necessary. Ability to reach, stoop, crouch, and kneel while performing lab tasks; this includes the potential need to crouch or kneel inside a robotic cluster for maintenance or intervention when necessary. Must possess excellent manual dexterity and fine motor skills for repetitive tasks such as precise pipetting, small‑scale cell culture manipulation, and operating complex instrumentation. Work is primarily performed in a laboratory setting which requires strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g., Biosafety Level 2). Potential exposure to hazardous materials, including biological agents (e.g., human samples, cell lines) and cryogenic materials (e.g., liquid nitrogen). Required use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including lab coats, safety glasses, and gloves for extended periods. This role requires the ability to work a standard schedule, but may necessitate occasional evening or weekend work to complete time‑sensitive experiments (e.g., process dependent media addition or exchanges, sampling). Some roles may require on‑call availability or work during non‑standard business hours depending on the nature of the research or manufacturing schedule. Travel While our headquarters is located in San Francisco, CA, this position will require up to 25% domestic and international travel. Total Rewards & Life at Multiply Labs Competitive Compensation: Salary range of $115,000 - $135,000 a year plus meaningful early‑stage equity. We want our team to have a real stake in the future we’re building. Premium Health: Premium Medical, Dental, and Vision plans with subsidies for child dependents. Wealth Building: 401(k) with a 4% company match to help you plan for the long term. Pre‑Tax Commuter Benefit: Pay for eligible transit and parking with pre‑tax dollars to save on commuting costs. Parental Support: Robust Paid Parental Leave to support your family’s newest additions. True Flexibility: We offer Flexible PTO and 12 Paid Holidays, trusting you to manage your time and recharge when you need it. No Set Hours: Set your own schedule in alignment with your manager and team. We hold a high bar, measuring success by impact and outcomes – not hours logged. Office Perks: A vibrant SF office culture featuring catered team lunches, stocked kitchen, and frequent team events. H-1B and Green Card sponsorship available for exceptional talent. Referral bonuses for helping us build a world‑class team. Great people, meaningful work , and a team that genuinely believes in what we're building. We actively seek candidates with diverse perspectives and lived experiences. We’re committed to building a team where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to do their best work.
