Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) - SOM Surg-Neuro

Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Neurosciences Step‑Down Unit will provide comprehensive, evidence‑based care to patients with acute stroke and general neurological conditions requiring intermediate (step‑down) level monitoring. The APP obtains relevant medical histories, performs detailed neurological and physical examinations, reviews and interprets diagnostic studies, develops differential diagnoses, and implements individualized treatment plans, including ordering tests and prescribing therapies consistent with departmental guidelines and privileging. Working closely with the stroke, general neurology, and neurocritical care teams, the APP coordinates care across the continuum to ensure timely escalation or transition of care as patient needs evolve. The APP maintains accurate documentation, incorporates hospital quality and safety initiatives, prioritizes workflow to support efficient patient throughput, and performs procedures within scope of practice. In addition, the APP provides education to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow‑up, and collaborates with physicians, trainees, nursing, and ancillary staff to support interdisciplinary learning and patient‑centered care while maintaining current knowledge of neurologic disease processes and emerging evidence in stroke and neurology. Responsibilities Clinical: Obtains relevant health and medical history, performs thorough physical assessment, reviews and interprets pertinent diagnostic tests/ results. Develops appropriate differential diagnoses. Implements treatment plans with evidence‑based pharmacological agents consistent with departmental guidelines and privileging, and schedules follow‑up. Incorporates evidence‑based hospital initiatives, conducts preventive health screening, maintains concise records, stays current in specialty literature, revises plans as patient needs change, prioritizes workflow, and performs medical procedures per guidelines. Education: Professionally educates clients/families on medical condition, treatment, and follow‑up. Collaborates with clinicians, staff, and students to promote continuity and patient‑centered care. Develops educational materials, provides instruction to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries, and students. Participates in self‑learning and attends education programs. Leadership: Provides instruction and training to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries, and students—precepting, shadowing, lectures, training classes, CE, rounds, morning reports, and staff meetings. Participates in community/network outreach programs and leads community outreach. Applies knowledge of healthcare contexts to improve system performance and leads or participates in system improvements. Professional: Interacts with patients and families respectfully, courteously, and timely. Collaborates with coworkers and teams with respect and timely communication, resolves problems quickly, shares accountability, and accepts responsibility for outcomes. Quality/Research: Engages in continuous quality improvement, identifies and implements improvement processes, consults with management on clinical/system issues, leads interdisciplinary teams, revises protocols/guidelines based on evidence, influences policy to improve patient care, and develops new clinical programs or services. Strongly prefer inpatient Neurology or Hospitalist experience. Daytime coverage including rotating weekends. Education Requirements Completion of an accredited graduate‑level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program. Licensure/Certification Requirements Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department. DEA. Professional Experience Requirements No prior experience required. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Requirements Demonstrated clinical competency. Effective leadership skills and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated written and verbal communication and strong analytical skills. Effective interaction to ensure the successful care of patients in the clinical setting. Documentation in the medical record to substantiate accurate billing.
