The mission of Facilities Management is to enable the institute to carry out its mission of teaching, research, and advisory service by providing cost-effective and efficient planning, design, construction, maintenance, safety, and security services throughout the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and William & Mary's Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences. Job Description: Position Summary The Security Guard provides security services to William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences Gloucester Point Campus. Reporting to the Security Officer, the Security Guard works under direct supervision with some independent decision-making to support the safety and security of campus employees, students, visitors, buildings, and grounds. The position performs routine and scheduled campus patrols, monitors designated areas for security and safety concerns, supports building security and access, and responds to security-related needs and alarms. Job Description: Position Summary The Security Guard provides security services to William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences Gloucester Point Campus. Reporting to the Security Officer, the Security Guard works under direct supervision with some independent decision-making to support the safety and security of campus employees, students, visitors, buildings, and grounds. The position performs routine and scheduled campus patrols, monitors designated areas for security and safety concerns, supports building security and access, and responds to security-related needs and alarms. The Security Guard also provides security support for campus events and after-hours operations as needed. Responsibilities include:
- Monitor campus buildings and grounds to support the safety of staff, students, and visitors and identify and report suspicious activity, security concerns, and safety hazards.
- Conduct routine inspections and scheduled patrols of designated campus areas.
- Support building security through routine patrols and scheduled locking and unlocking of buildings and rooms.
- Provide escort services and support parking enforcement, traffic control, special events, and after-hours campus functions.
- Respond to fire alarms and other security-related needs and maintain static security posts when required.
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License
- Demonstrated experience in a security position or a related field (e.g., law enforcement, military, etc.) or experience with building security and protection.
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions, established procedures, and security protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and implement security plans.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with employees, students, visitors, and other members of the campus community.
- Ability to remain attentive to surroundings, recognize security or safety concerns, and appropriately report observed conditions or activity.
- Ability to respond promptly and exercise sound judgment in situations requiring action or escalation.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively regarding security concerns, incidents, and campus needs.
- Ability to work independently within established procedures while maintaining appropriate communication with security personnel and supervisors.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including mobility necessary to conduct campus patrols and use stairs.
- Experience working in a campus environment.
- Basic computer proficiency with the ability to use web-based applications.
- This is an hourly pool position that works variable hours during the week/evenings and/or weekends and when the Campus is closed and requires Security 24/7.
- All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
- This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
- Must meet the physical conditions of the job. Requires mobility to use stairs.
- Requires both attention to events and sitting patiently and discreetly while they occur, sometimes for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to maintain a valid driver's license.
- This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.
- Conduct routine foot patrols of campus buildings and grounds to observe and report criminal or suspicious activity, safety hazards, security concerns, and other unusual conditions.
- Inspect designated priority areas at scheduled intervals to support the safety and security of employees, students, visitors, facilities, and University property.
- Maintain awareness of campus conditions while on patrol and respond appropriately to observed security or safety concerns in accordance with established procedures.
- Document completion of scheduled patrols through the Tour-Pro system and communicate identified concerns or incidents to the Security Supervisor.
- Provide a visible security presence throughout the Gloucester Point Campus and assist campus community members as appropriate during patrol activities.
- Provide routine and special locking and unlocking of campus buildings and rooms in accordance with established schedules and security procedures.
- Inspect buildings during security rounds to identify unusual conditions and ensure doors, windows, and other designated access points are properly secured.
- Monitor building and facility conditions and report security, safety, or maintenance concerns requiring additional attention.
- Support access and building security needs associated with after-hours campus operations and scheduled activities.
- Provide escort services as requested to assist individuals in safely reaching their campus destination.
- Assist with traffic control, parking enforcement, parking assignments, and security needs associated with special events and after-hours functions.
- Respond to fire alarm calls and reset alarm equipment when needed in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain static security posts and provide other security support as needed for campus events, operations, and emergency situations.
