Position Overview The Controller Division is seeking to hire a highly motivated, energetic, and customer-focused Accountant 1 to join the Travel and Relocation (CNTL-TAR) group, supporting the Relocation Team. The Travel and Relocation group ensures LANL's workforce mobility through compliant, cost-effective, and employee-focused travel and relocation services. The group administers end-to-end management of business travel reimbursements, reservations, and domestic/international relocations in alignment with DOE, IRS, and LANL policies. The position reports to the CNTL-TAR Group Leader and focuses on coordinating, processing, and reviewing relocation-related reimbursements, ensuring a smooth employee experience. The ideal candidate takes ownership, exercises sound judgment on complex issues, and maintains accountability, accuracy, and attention to detail in a demanding environment. The role may rotate across functional teams within the group or division to support operational needs and perform other related duties within the same job level. Onsite work may be required at management's request. Key Responsibilities Administers employee relocation reimbursements for new hires, reassignments, and terminations in accordance with DOE and IRS guidelines, accounting standards, and lab policies Manage relocation expense submissions, ensuring compliance with a complex set of federal regulations and Laboratory policies, and overseeing the accurate use of reimbursement systems and online travel tools Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including Human Resources, hiring organizations, household goods carriers, relocation vendors, and other service providers to facilitate relocation support and resolve issues. Maintain strong internal controls, ensuring proper accounting treatment of all transactions, and providing guidance and solutions for a variety of complex reimbursement and policy-related issues Coordinate directly with employees, hiring managers, and third-party relocation vendors to streamline the relocation process Review and document relocation-related expenses, ensuring compliance with taxability rules, cost allowability, and funding source accuracy Maintain detailed records for audit purposes and support financial transparency through monthly reporting and reconciliation What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Travel Experience : Experience supporting travel, relocation, disbursement, or other financial operations involving complex reimbursement and compliance requirements Accounting Experience : Knowledge of accounting/financial concepts and principles including GAAP and internal controls for disbursement operations; ability to identify process improvements and develop strategies and procedures; experience performing reconciliations, maintaining supporting documentation, and assisting with audit-related activities Problem Solving : Ability to research, analyze data, summarize results, resolve problems independently and as a team Compliance, Customer Service, Teamwork : Knowledge of federal travel regulations; strong customer service with interpersonal skills; ability to interact with customers, staff, management, and stakeholders; strong organizational skills to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Communication : Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to lead initiatives for change and improvement Technology : Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with automated reservations and travel expense systems; experience with ERP systems such as Oracle Financials or similar Education/Experience Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field plus 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience The starting salary will be determined based on education, experience, internal equity, and market factors Desired Qualifications Travel Regulations and experience with DOE regulations regarding external assignments and conference travel Experience with Concur Travel and Expense Knowledge of LANL Travel policies Knowledge of the Federal Travel Regulation Experience using automation and AI-enabled tools (e.g., Microsoft Power Automate, Copilot) to improve processes, reporting, workflow efficiency, and customer service Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Work Environment Work Location: Telework is available and located in Los Alamos. Telework means working from offsite but within a 2-hour ground commute. Onsite reporting may be periodically necessary.
