Safety Assistant Department: Operations & Safety Bargain Unit Classification: Bargaining Unit-EARL Reports To: School Administration FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt Pay Scale/Lane: Collective Bargaining Agreement Benefits: Benefit Summary Work Calendar: School Year Support Staff Version Date: 1/2026 SUMMARY OF POSITION The safety assistant provides security services for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds; monitoring the main lobby/entrance and other areas of school grounds; assuring student compliance with school and District rules and procedures; and communicating information in response to inquiries. This class also provides a positive role model for students and promotes positive relationships with students. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate Two (2) years of full-time employment or equivalent experience that aligns to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below OR Meet one of the following four options: Completed 50 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or Obtained an associate’s degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or Met a formal state assessment by ONE of the following means: Passed the ETS ParaPro assessment (460 or higher); Passed the applicable ACT WorkKeys assessment (applied math-4; reading for information-4, writing/business writing-3; and an “Acceptable” on the Instructional Support Inventory); Met state paraprofessional approval PLUS 300 Professional Training Points (PTPS) B. CREDENTIALS Candidate may be required to possess a current Illinois Motor Vehicle Class D Operator licence. Candidate may be required to have CPR and First Aid certification. C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of restorative practices, Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and positive behavior support strategies. Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, District policies, procedures, and student confidentiality requirements. Knowledge of school safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and crisis prevention practices. Knowledge of the cognitive, social, emotional, communicative, and physical needs of students and factors that influence student development and behavior. Knowledge of and respect for diverse cultural, linguistic, environmental, and socioeconomic backgrounds and their impact on student learning and engagement. Effective interpersonal, relationship‑building, and conflict resolution skills with students, staff, families, and community members. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information and respond appropriately to questions, concerns, and complaints. Ability to apply restorative practices, MTSS principles, and behavior intervention strategies to support positive student outcomes. Ability to establish rapport with students and reinforce positive social, emotional, and behavioral development. Ability to maintain professionalism, ethical practices, and confidentiality when handling sensitive student and staff information. Ability to assess situations, exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and respond effectively during emergencies or crises. Ability to follow oral and written directions while demonstrating initiative and independent decision‑making when appropriate. Ability to analyze information, maintain accurate documentation, and prepare reports and correspondence related to assigned duties. Ability to administer first aid and utilize approved safety, de‑escalation, and protective techniques when necessary to maintain safety. Ability to work effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds while contributing to a safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assesses situations for potential danger, responds appropriately, and calls for assistance when necessary. Supports Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavioral interventions within the MTSS framework and assists with Level 1 student behavior incidents. Assists in maintaining a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment through collaboration with staff and administration. Supervises students in hallways, common areas, arrival/dismissal, and school activities to ensure compliance with school expectations and behavioral standards. Assists with student arrival, dismissal, bus loading/unloading, parent pick‑up/drop‑off, crossing areas, and traffic flow to promote safety. Monitors entrances, exits, hallways, parking lots, school grounds, and assigned areas to identify safety concerns, unauthorized activity, or behavioral issues. Conducts building security procedures including perimeter checks, monitoring door access systems, and maintaining awareness of vehicles entering and leaving campus. Utilizes security systems and tools including radios, security cameras, visitor management systems, eHallpass, and other monitoring platforms. Manages visitor access procedures including issuing visitor passes, verifying authorization, directing visitors appropriately, and addressing unauthorized access concerns. Intervenes in conflicts, fights, disturbances, or confrontational situations using de‑escalation and safe intervention strategies to restore order and maintain student safety. Responds immediately to emergencies, including incidents involving weapons, drugs, medical situations, threats, or other safety concerns. Escorts students, visitors, or others as needed to ensure appropriate supervision and location compliance. Monitors student movement including hall passes, tardiness, truancy concerns, and visitor authorization procedures. Communicates school rules, safety procedures, and behavioral expectations to students, staff, visitors, and families as appropriate. Documents incidents, maintains accurate records, prepares reports, and communicates concerns to appropriate personnel. Reports suspicious behavior, safety concerns, unauthorized individuals, or criminal activity to appropriate personnel or authorities. Assists building administration with emergency preparedness activities, safety drills, and implementation of school safety procedures. Maintains positive, professional, and respectful relationships with students, staff, families, and community members. Participates in required training, professional development, committees, and direction provided by supervisors or lead safety personnel. Performs other related duties, including assignments at other district locations, and adheres to district uniform and professional expectations.
