Patient Care Tech / Certified Nurse Aide – Float Team (Olathe Hospital) Position Summary: Looking for variety in your workday? Our Resource/Float Team provides care across all inpatient units, the Hospice House, and the Emergency Department. Under the direct supervision of a nurse, the Patient Care Tech (Hospital) is cross‑trained as a Unit Secretary, Unit Assistant, and Nurse Tech. Responsibilities combine direct patient care, technical assistance to the nurse, and various computer, clerical, scheduling, and supply functions necessary for unit operation. The role requires excellent communication skills, self‑motivation, and the ability to make decisions with limited supervision while keeping others appropriately informed. A strong knowledge of emergency procedures and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations are essential. Responsibilities Prepare for admission, transfers, and discharges, including securing IV pumps, zeroing beds, and updating white boards. Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by cleaning equipment, using infection control techniques, reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment, changing sharps containers, keeping hallways clear, and wiping down desks and nurse stations. Perform clinical duties such as hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance, weight/height, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar, and measuring intake and output; accurately collect and label specimens for the lab. Make rounds and respond to call lights promptly, providing excellent customer service and reporting any unusual incidents or changes in patient condition to appropriate staff while maintaining confidentiality. Communicate information to nurses and unit coordinators regarding phone calls, stat orders, critical results, and patient needs. Use technology appropriately: enter data, secure information from the computer system, and accurately enter orders and charges into the system as required. Manage own time, prioritize tasks, and make appropriate decisions regarding patient care. Contribute to the plan of care under the nurse’s direction, following patient safety goals such as fall risk assessment and skin monitoring, and reinforce patient teaching initiated by the nurse. Demonstrate phlebotomy skills after lab training, including accurate labeling of specimens and maintaining supplies. Assist RN, physician, or PA with various patient care duties (e.g., cast/splint application, suturing, lumbar punctures, discontinuing IVs and urinary catheters, holter monitoring, ECG/MUSE editing, spinal immobilization, post‑mortem care) and communicate actions to RN. Perform professional, clinical, and technical competencies of the assigned unit or department; other duties may be assigned as required. Required Education and Experience High School Graduate or GED or current enrollment in a high school or GED program. Hold a CNA license or have completed the Gold Standard Intern Program. Have documentation of fundamentals of nursing courses. Have a minimum of 18 months in a relevant patient‑care role. Required Licensure and Certification Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days of hire.
