Job Description

The Food Service Associate plays a key role in supporting hospital food service operations by preparing, serving, and distributing meals in a fast-paced healthcare environment. This day-shift position runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and involves culinary tasks, food service support, and deep cleaning activities. The role offers the opportunity to learn a variety of skills, interact with a diverse group of customers and colleagues, and has potential to transition into a full-time or part-time permanent position.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, portion, and assemble food items according to established standards and safety guidelines.
• Serve and distribute food to patients, staff, and visitors, ensuring accuracy and quality of meal orders.
• Work on the tray line to assemble and deliver meal trays efficiently and correctly.
• Support operations in the dish room by loading, unloading, and cleaning dishes, utensils, and trays.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in all food service areas, including mopping, sweeping, and housekeeping tasks.
• Assist as a cashier in the cafeteria, handling transactions and providing courteous customer service.
• Perform utility and sanitation duties, including waste removal and equipment cleaning to meet food safety standards.
• Work in the storeroom to receive, store, and organize food and supply inventory as needed.
• Serve as a dipper or similar station attendant, ensuring portion control and timely service.
• Follow written and oral instructions to complete daily tasks and special assignments accurately.
• Adhere to food safety and hygiene practices, including proper handling, storage, and labeling of food items.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth, efficient meal service across multiple hospital areas.
• Carry out additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support overall department operations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior food service experience, particularly in healthcare or hospitality, is preferred.
• Experience with general labor tasks such as mopping, sweeping, and housekeeping.
• Familiarity with food preparation, food safety practices, and tray line operations.
• Comfort working in back-of-house environments with a focus on utility and sanitation duties.
• Interest in learning multiple aspects of foodservice, including cashiering, dish room work, and storeroom support.

Work Environment

This position is based in hospital food service areas within a large healthcare network in and around Pittsburgh, PA, including Jefferson Hospital and other facilities such as Allegheny General Hospital, Allegheny Valley Hospital, West Penn Hospital, Wexford Hospital, Canonsburg, and Forbes Regional. The work takes place primarily in back-of-the-house environments rather than direct patient-facing areas, with responsibilities spanning tray line, dish room, utility and sanitation, storeroom, and cafeteria support. The schedule for this role is a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, in a fast-paced setting that requires consistent physical activity, attention to cleanliness, and adherence to food safety standards. Team members work with standard commercial kitchen and foodservice equipment and follow established dress and hygiene guidelines suitable for a healthcare foodservice operation.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of McKeesport, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
