Deputy Sheriff - Entry Level and Lateral

Overview The Cobb County Sheriff's Office is mandated by the Constitution of the State of Georgia and executes a broad range of services including jail operations, court security, criminal warrant execution, civil process service, mental health transports, forgery/fraud investigation, and fugitive investigation and apprehension. Required Testing Physical Agility Test (PAT), polygraph, psychological and medical evaluations are required. The Physical Agility Test consists of multiple laps, obstacle courses, and dummy drag exercises that must be completed in 2 minutes, 6 seconds or less. Responsibilities Enforce all local and state codes, ordinances, laws and regulations. Provide courtroom security and support court proceedings. Conduct security checks, electronic and visual screening, and safeguard judges. Manage prisoners, maintain surveillance, and conduct searches. Transport inmates to assigned locations, ensuring safety. Serve felony and misdemeanor warrants and civil papers. Patrol designated areas, respond to calls, apprehend criminals, and process crime scenes. Process incoming detainees, conduct searches and fingerprinting, and perform security patrols. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED and ability to graduate from the POST academy within 18 months, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be a U.S. citizen, possess a valid driver’s license, be at least 21 years of age, pass a background investigation, have no felony convictions, pass a polygraph, physical, psychological, and oral interview examinations, and maintain POST certification. Ability to exert heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, bent, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting 20–100 pounds. Must possess the sensory and environmental endurance required for duties that involve exposure to adverse conditions. Compensation Base Pay Entry Level Deputy Sheriff: $54,000 per year (18‑month working test period) Lateral Officer Pay: Credit for years of service and placement in the step‑in‑grade pay scale. Shift Differential Evening shift: $0.50/hr Overnight shift: $1.00/hr Detention center eligible: $1.30/hr Education Incentive Pay Associate’s Degree: $1,000 (≈$250 per quarter) Bachelor’s Degree: $2,000 (≈$500 per quarter) Master’s Degree: $3,000 (≈$750 per quarter) Other Compensation Take Home Vehicle Program Hazardous Duty Pay where applicable On‑Call for Court Pay Paid Overtime Annual Peace Officers' Annuity and Benefits (POAB) fees paid by employer; paid at $300 per year toward retirement.
