Accountant

The Senior Accountant manages finance and accounting records on behalf of the University Musical Society. This position reports to the CFO, VP Finance & Administration. The Senior Accountant manages all financial administration and reporting. They will work with accounting clerks and coordinate with other departments and units within the University of Michigan. This position will prepare and analyze statements, reports and records making studies and recommendations relative to accounting.They will review and verify the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications. They will utilize technology to retrieve accounting information and apply a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in finance. (40%) Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial reports required by various stakeholders Prepare income and balance sheet statements, consolidated statements and other accounting statements and reports Customize financial reports and processes to meet regular reporting needs and ensure accurate financials are issued Work within various University Systems (Wolverine Access, M-Pathways, Business Objects) to maintain accurate accounting records Prepare and reconcile monthly balance sheet reconciliations Address in a timely fashion all review comments and accounting adjustments monthly Work closely with the VP of Finance and Administration to ensure timely and accurate (25%) Monthly Variance Analysis Prepare balance sheet and income statement flux analysis and research variances, perform monthly reconciliation of the general ledger detail for both income statement and balance sheet activity Reconcile monthly bank statement to ledger Prepare monthly budget variance reports in conjunction with internal UMS departments Meet and discuss monthly variance and plans to correct general ledger corrections to ensure proper accounting records Provide monthly budget variance report to VP, Finance & Administration for review (25%) Journal entry processing Oversee regular monthly journal entries (ticket revenue, ticket service fees, depreciation, online donations, credit card transfers, corrections to the general ledger) Manage process and post semi-annual settlement journal entries related to UPROD, SMTD, AASF Manage process and post semi-annual settlement journal entries related to affiliates Manage process and post annual year-end closing entries (5%) Tax Preparation (Form 990) Prepare Tax Form 990 for the organization and all accompanying support documentation Ensure proper extensions are filed when necessary Assist the VP of Finance and Administration in various special projects Run ad hoc reports as needed Fill in as a backup for accounting clerk duties on occasion Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance 5 - 8 years of professional experience Knowledge of GAAP, FASB and/or GASB, and accounting practices and procedures Advanced experience in Microsoft Office 365 and Google Platforms Advanced experience in Excel Demonstrated excellent written and verbal skills as evidenced by clear written procedures and/or oral presentations resulting in messages being understood by constituents. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with attention to detail, and a self-starter with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
