Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Civil Engineering Job Summary The Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in the broad domain of Sustainability and Resilience with an anticipated start date as early as January 2026. Candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate or be ABD in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or another closely related field at the time of appointment. We especially encourage candidates whose work aligns with the department's dedication to cutting‑edge research and student‑centered teaching, particularly in sustainable development, smart infrastructure design, disaster risk management, climate adaptation, and resilient urban and coastal planning. Candidates with expertise in interdisciplinary applications complementing our existing strengths in structural, transportation, geotechnical, sustainable water, environmental engineering, computing and/or construction are sought. Candidates who have demonstrated the ability to secure external funding, lead multidisciplinary research programs, and maintain a strong publication record will be highly desirable. The department is housed within the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, which is committed to excellence in education, scholarship, and service. It offers three undergraduate programs—Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering—as well as a graduate program with a strong focus on civil engineering. The department has a proven track record of securing external funding for resiliency‑related research, with projects spanning multiple disciplines across the university. Teaching assignments may be on the main campus or at off‑campus sites within our region. Job Description Typical duties may include but are not limited to: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to civil engineering, as well as selected lower‑level interdisciplinary engineering courses. Plan and teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment. Engage in regular grant writing and scholarly research, with a focus on securing external funding from federal, state, and local agencies to support and advance research initiatives. Contribute service to the university, the department, and the broader professional community. Must work closely with the Department Chair and other faculty on assessment and evaluation tasks necessary for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation. Hold office hours. Attend departmental meetings. Adopt course materials in a timely manner. Adopt the university learning management system. Adopt other campus‑wide technology platforms as appropriate to other specified job duties. Complete mandatory/required training in a timely manner. Abide by University Policies and Regulations. Participate in the evaluation process in accordance with the CBA and related documents. Participate in the assessment process as required by your respective department. Timely and professional communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators. Engage in essential duties with the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, excellence, and within the accepted practices and norms of your respective field/profession. Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students. Engage in reflective self‑assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance. Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments. Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University. Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission. Attend faculty and college meetings as required. Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program. Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals. Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met. Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours. Perform regular scholarly research and publication. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Additional Job Description Appointment will be made at a faculty rank commensurate with the candidate's experience on a 9‑month multi‑year appointment basis available with an anticipated start date of January 2026. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field of Engineering from an accredited institution or equivalent accreditation. ABD candidates will be considered, provided the doctoral degree is conferred by January 2, 2026. If the selected candidate is ABD at the time of appointment, the position will be offered at the Lecturer level on a fixed‑term contract until the degree is conferred. Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution. Preferred Qualifications Teaching, research, and scholarly interests that align with the programs and mission of U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering. Civil engineer with expertise in areas related to sustainability and resilience. Relevant field experience in one or more of the above‑listed areas is highly desirable. A rank‑appropriate record of educational and/or scientific publication in scholarly journals pertinent to the interest areas above is expected. Field experience related to civil engineering or other closely related fields may be considered in lieu of publication. Successful candidates must be able to teach new and/or existing courses in civil and environmental engineering, as well as in selected general engineering topics. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s). Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals. Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills. Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry‑based instructional models and strategies. Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g., face‑to‑face, synchronous online, or asynchronous online). Ability to collaborate with related disciplines and to establish relationships internally as well as to successfully develop relationships and interact with external industry partners and the southwest Florida community. Ability to communicate effectively, work in a highly collaborative faculty environment, conduct themselves professionally, and perform appropriate service functions at the program, school, and university level. Ability to deal effectively with a various range of learners and to use information technology as a pedagogical and professional tool. Ability to work with and mentor student organizations, clubs, and competition teams. Ability to foster an entrepreneurial mindset that spans engineering education and research. Ability to collaborate within and beyond the university to develop both undergraduate and graduate research programs, as well as to implement innovative and effective instructional strategies that enhance student learning.
