Phlebotomist Technician I Job Description Summary: The Phlebotomist Technician I is responsible for preparing patients for blood collection, collecting blood from patients, ensuring accurate labeling of specimens, and delivering these specimens to the laboratory for testing. The role involves providing professional phlebotomy services to patients in accordance with established policies and procedures under general supervision. Responsibilities Prepare patients for blood collection, ensuring correct techniques are used in obtaining blood specimens. Accurately label blood samples and deliver them to the laboratory for timely testing. Adhere to established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of phlebotomy services. Provide high‑quality phlebotomy services while maintaining professionalism and sensitivity to patient needs. Demonstrate continued development in phlebotomy techniques, focusing on skill acquisition and refinement of knowledge. Exhibit behavior consistent with the Standards of Behavior as outlined by the Medical University Hospital Authority, including professionalism, teamwork, and adherence to ethical standards. Perform phlebotomy tasks under guidance and supervision of more experienced phlebotomists until a competent level of practice is achieved. Qualifications Completion of phlebotomy training or equivalent education. Ability to learn and apply phlebotomy techniques in a clinical environment. Excellent communication skills, with a focus on patient care and comfort. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and adhere to strict procedural guidelines. Physical and occupational requirements: Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes, working from elevated areas, in confined spaces, from kneeling positions, bending and twisting at the waist, squatting, pinching, gross and fine motor activities, reaching overhead, repetitive motions of hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders, using both legs, maintaining balance, carrying and lifting 50 lbs. unassisted and lifting objects up to 25 lbs. overhead, exerting up to 50 lbs. of force. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes; ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance; ability to discriminate between colors; ability to determine distance and depth perception; good peripheral vision; maintain hearing acuity with correction; perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements; deal effectively with stressful situations. Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and in a latex safe environment.
