Position Overview Lead Highway Maintenance Specialist (TM II) – Limon, Colorado. Total annual compensation: $59,460.00 – $64,752.00. CDOT employees play a key role in keeping the traveling public safe and connected. Some positions qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Major Duties and Responsibilities Plan and schedule daily patrol activities; mentor and evaluate crew performance. Ensure crew meets training requirements and conduct safety talks. Maintain roadway surfaces through patching, milling, crack sealing, and shoulder work. Maintain roadside facilities: drainage, fences, gates, sound barriers, litter cleanup, rock slides. Carry out traffic services including sign replacement, guardrail installation, pavement marking, and warning device maintenance. Maintain roadside appearance through vegetation control, mowing, weeding, and tree work. Perform bridge and structure maintenance and repair: inspection, painting, deck work, and device maintenance. Execute snow and ice control: removal, traction application, fence repair, and stock piling. Maintain and repair equipment, buildings, and grounds. Prepare required paperwork and reports; use SAP for work orders and time‑sheet entries. Trim or remove trees and graffiti. Operate light to heavy equipment and ensure proper PPE usage. Assist other patrols as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, dust, chemicals, and high voltage. Work near heavy traffic; use of ladders and scissor lifts (10–20 ft). Operate heavy equipment (backhoe, tractor, forklift, etc.) and drive CDOT vehicles. Night and weekend assignments; response to emergencies; potential overtime. Work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 ft. Use computers for daily duties. Average work week of 40 hours, with overtime as needed. Must read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Minimum Qualifications At least 3 years of road/highway maintenance experience. Examples of relevant experience: pothole repair, asphalt or concrete paving, heavy equipment operation (bulldozers, graders, backhoes, loaders), fence maintenance, street marking, mowing, bridge or ditch cleaning, sign or guardrail installation, and mechanical snow removal. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to fulfill the duties listed above. State service experience related to the position. Experience scheduling and planning daily work activities for subordinates. Knowledge of Emergency Response Guidelines, MUTCD, Chain Law, FMCS, CDL Manual, MLOS, and CDOT policies. Valid Colorado CDL Class A/B with hazardous materials or tanker endorsements. Proficiency in operating heavy equipment and hand tools. Strong safety commitment, communication skills, leadership, and customer service. Proficiency with SAP, Microsoft Office Suite, and related software. Conditions of Employment Must possess a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction. Must pass a pre‑employment screening (social‑security, criminal, educational, and driving records). May need to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year. May be required to pass a drug test and DOT physical. May require overtime, weekends, and holidays. Required to report promptly for essential or emergency services outside of regular hours. Must live within 30 minutes of the work station and provide a reachable phone number. Must attend a one‑week annual training in Aurora.
