Description

The Loyola Notre Dame Library (LNDL) seeks an imaginative and innovative leader who will articulate a clear vision for a unit that includes the university archives of Loyola University Maryland and Notre Dame of Maryland University, special collections, and rare books. The successful candidate will be an individual who is creative, flexible, and enthusiastic about serving the educational missions of the two university communities by expanding access and promoting the use of collections through classroom instruction, outreach, public presentations, tours, and exhibits. The individual in this position will be responsible for building, preserving, and providing access to collections in digital and physical formats according to archival best practices.


Position Responsibilities:

• Provide vision and leadership in directing and managing the programs and operations of Archives and Special Collections.
• Track developments in academic archives and identify, evaluate, and implement standards and technologies to enhance departmental workflows and user services.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate professional staff, volunteers, and student workers.
• Develop programs and services to acquire, process, and provide access to special collections and archives in a variety of formats.
• Collaborate with faculty to create meaningful educational experiences with archives and special collections for students.
• Partner with campus stakeholders to develop new and innovative ways to engage students, faculty, and staff with collections.
• Continue and enhance the department's capacity and expertise in managing and preserving born-digital and digitized materials.
• Participate in the library's support of digital scholarship activities on both campuses.
• Build, maintain, and provide access to the rare book collection.
• Build and maintain successful donor relationships.
• Coordinate exhibition and outreach programming for the department as well as participation in university events and programs.
• Partner with campus constituencies to develop and implement a program of records management and retention.
• Develop and implement assessment strategies to determine the effectiveness of services.
• Identify, write, and implement grant proposals and projects.
• Serve as a member of the library's Senior Leadership Team.
• Perform liaison duties to promote services and resources to faculty.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

• MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program with an emphasis in archives and records management.
• Five years of related experience. Three years of supervisory or leadership experience.
• Knowledge of archival theory and practice as well as physical and digital preservation concepts, principles, and methodologies.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with programs to integrate archives and special collections in research, curricular and co-curricular use, and community engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and mentor staff.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Commitment to building strong relations between the library and academic departments at both universities, the two university communities, and external communities
• Evidence of well-developed organizational, time, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge and/or experience developing and preserving digital collections.
• Experience identifying and applying for grants.
• Experience organizing and mounting exhibits.
• Ability to cultivate and maintain effective relations with donors.
• Experience managing rare book collections.
