Machinist/Welder
The harvest shop Machinist/Welder will be required to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. This individual may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures, and must be able to follow procedures and planned work schedules while responding to emergencies as directed by supervision.
Job Responsibilities
- Safely, correctly, and efficiently repair and maintain harvest equipment including but not limited to cane elevators, cane harvesters, tractors, air compressors, and other support equipment
- Perform time based repairs and inspections
- Perform basic diagnosis of equipment failures
- Change parts and components on equipment
- Operate support equipment such as bucket truck, boom truck, carry deck, and other mobile equipment
- Operate various lifting devices including proper rigging procedures
- Read and understand shop manuals, blueprints and layout work
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers
- Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders
- Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers
- Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations
- Set up and operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, and cutting equipment
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances
- Establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products, using a variety of metalworking machines
- Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics
- Prepare working sketches for the illustration of product appearance
- Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information
- Advise clients about the materials being used for finished products
- Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts
- Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools
- Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
- Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures
- Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter
- Observe, listen, dismantle operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs using hand tools and power tools
- Install/evaluate experimental parts/procedures, and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production
- Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
Qualifications
- Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills, and characteristics
- Must have at least 3 years of Machinist work experience. (Completion of a Machining program at a Technical College may be substituted in lieu of 2 years of work experience.)
- Must have successfully completed the 6G welding test and be 6G certified
- Must be proficient in all aspects of SMAW(stick), GMAW(MIG), and GTAW(TIG) welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting, and air carbon arc cutting
- Must be able to read and understand shop manuals, blueprints and layout work
- Must be able to calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers
- Must be able to follow instructions and communicate information pertaining to the job
- Must be able to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the area
- Must successfully complete any required orientation, training, and continuing education courses
- Must have a valid Florida driver's license Class E or above
- Must have successfully completed the TOST and/or Ramsey Test

- Ability to operate and use all equipment necessary and use common office equipment
- Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift more than 75 pounds
