Registered Behavior Technician

Position Summary

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) provides direct behavioral intervention services to students under the supervision of the Director of Exceptional Children. The RBT supports students with behavioral, social-emotional, communication, and adaptive skill development while helping to create safe, positive, and inclusive learning environments aligned with the mission and values of Sugar Creek Charter School (SCCS). The RBT works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and other individualized behavioral supports that promote student success across academic and school settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Student Support

• Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and individualized behavioral support strategies developed by the Director of Exceptional Children and the student's IEP team.
• Provide one-on-one and small-group behavioral support in classrooms and other school settings.
• Teach replacement behaviors, communication skills, social skills, self-regulation strategies, and adaptive skills as appropriate.
• Assist students in developing independence while reducing challenging behaviors.
• Utilize evidence-based behavior intervention strategies with fidelity.

Data Collection and Documentation

• Collect accurate behavioral and instructional data during intervention sessions.
• Maintain confidential student records in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and school policies.
• Assist the Director of Exceptional Children in monitoring student progress and evaluating the effectiveness of behavioral interventions.
• Complete required documentation in a timely and accurate manner.

Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, Exceptional Children teachers, counselors, related service providers, administrators, and families.
• Participate in IEP meetings, manifestation determination reviews, functional behavior assessments, and student support meetings as requested.
• Communicate regularly with the Director of Exceptional Children and school staff regarding student progress, behavioral trends, and intervention effectiveness.
• Support consistent implementation of behavior strategies across all school environments.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain active Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credentials throughout employment.
• Complete all required professional development and continuing education to maintain certification.
• Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and Crisis Prevention/De-escalation certification as required by SCCS.
• Adhere to all professional and ethical standards governing Registered Behavior Technicians.
• Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Director of Exceptional Children, Principal, or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Current Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) credential in good standing. Ability to maintain active RBT credentials throughout employment. Experience working with students with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, emotional disabilities, or behavioral needs. Ability to collect behavioral data accurately and maintain confidentiality. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in a school environment.

Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Special Education, Human Services, or a related field. Experience working in a public or charter school setting. Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), Safety-Care, or equivalent de-escalation certification. CPR and First Aid certification.

• Knowledge of positive behavior supports and evidence-based behavioral interventions.
• Understanding of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
• Ability to remain calm during behavioral crises.
• Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
• Proficiency with technology used for documentation and communication.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the school day.
• Lift, carry, or move up to 40 pounds, with assistance when appropriate.
• Safely implement approved crisis intervention procedures when trained.
• Respond quickly to student behavioral or safety needs.
• Work indoors and outdoors as assigned.

Work Environment

The Registered Behavior Technician works in classrooms, therapy settings, playgrounds, cafeterias, hallways, buses, and community environments as needed. The position may involve exposure to students demonstrating challenging behaviors and requires the ability to respond appropriately using approved de-escalation and behavior support techniques.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Sugar Creek Charter School's employee evaluation process and based on implementation of behavioral supports, student progress, documentation, collaboration, professionalism, attendance, and compliance with school expectations.
