ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly. Supports YMCA healthy eating and physical activities standards through coaching, mentoring, and monitoring menu quality Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.). Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Certifications: CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certification. If not certified, will become certified within 30 days of employment. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent. Must be at least 16 years of age. Completes Praesidium within 7 days of hire date. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight. Must be able to lift equipment and carry supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
