Under general supervision of the Speech/Language Pathologist and Special Services Director, performs work of moderate difficulty providing speech and language services to students in Special Education. The Speech/Language Pathology Assistant assists the Speech Language Pathologist in the performance of their duties. Essential Functions:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a complete listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this job class. Responsibilities:
• Administers and scores screenings for clinical interpretation by the SLP
• Assists the SLP during assessment of students (e.g., setting up the testing environment, gathering and prepping materials, taking notes as advised by the SLP, etc.)
• Administers and scores assessment tools that (a) the SLPA meets the examiner requirements specified in the examiner's manual and (b) the supervising SLP uses to verify the SLPA's competence in administration, exclusive of clinical interpretation
• Administers and scores progress monitoring tools exclusive of clinical interpretation if (a) the SLPA meets the examiner requirements specified in the examiner's manual and (b) the supervising SLP uses to verify the SLPA's competence in administration, exclusive of clinical interpretation
• Implements Individual Education Plans (IEPs) developed and directed by the supervising SLP
• Provides direct therapy services addressing IEP goals developed by the supervising SLP to meet the needs of students with disabilities
• Adjusts and documents the amount and type of support or scaffolding provided to the student in special education to facilitate progress
• Develops and implements activities and materials for teaching and practice of skills to address the goals of the student per the IEP developed by the supervising SLP
• Provides treatment through a variety of service delivery models (e.g., individual, group, classroom-based, home-based, and co-treatment with other disciplines) as directed by the supervising SLP
• Documents student performance (e.g., collects data; calculates percentages for the SLP to use; prepares charts, records, and graphs, etc.) and reports this information to the supervising SLP in a timely manner
• Provide teacher or parent coaching (e.g., model and teach communication strategies, provide feedback regarding teacher/student or parent/student interactions) for facilitation and carryover of skills
• Shares objective information (e.g., accuracy in speech and language skills addressed, participation in treatment, response to treatment) regarding student performance to the student and their families or other service providers without interpretation or recommendations as directed by the SLP
• Programs augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
• Provides training and technical assistance to students, teachers, and families in the use of AAC devices
• Develops low-tech AAC materials for students, teachers, and families Knowledge, skills and other characteristics:
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive student/teacher interactions.
• Ability to take direction from others to perform tasks.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Ability to keep concise records.
• Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and groups.
• Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Knowledge of Special Education practices, rules and regulations.
• Skill in delivering Speech/Language instruction
• Skill in communication effectively, orally and in writing. Qualifications:
REQUIRED
• Bachelor's degree in Speech/Language Pathology or completion of an approved training program for Speech/Language Pathologist Assistants or the equivalent from a Nationally or Regionally accredited college or university that meets the requirements of ARS 36-1940.04
• Ability to obtain Arizona State Licensure as a Speech/Language Pathology Assistant within 60 days of initial employment DESIRED
• Experience in an educational setting
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations including: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); state statutes and rules regarding SLPA education, training, and scope of practice; and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Special Requirements:
Valid Arizona's Driver's license and clear driving record.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Level I - IVPP Fingerprint Clearance card through Arizona Department of Public Safety.
