Pharmacy Clinical Specialist PRN

Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital This PRN position requires a minimum of eight shifts per month, including two weekend shifts. Weekday hours are from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, while weekend hours vary between 8:00 am–4:30 pm and 9:00 am–5:30 pm. At Houston Methodist, the Pharmacy Clinical Specialist performs advanced clinical pharmacy duties, enabling optimal pharmacotherapy for patients and facilitating safe, efficacious, and pharmacoeconomically rational medication use. Responsibilities include daily reactive and proactive medication regimen reviews, delivery of pharmacy‑managed protocols, formulary processes, medication reconciliation, education to pharmacists, nurses, and medical staff, precepting students and residents, and contributing to the organization’s mission of innovative, personalized, cost‑effective care.

Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required pharmacy credential(s) (e.g., ASHP‑accredited). Experience Must meet one of the following: Successful completion of an ASHP‑accredited post‑graduate year one (PGY1) residency training program or equivalent experience (e.g., three years of pharmacy experience per residency year); PGY2 or fellowship preferred. Three years of clinical practice experience. Meets Houston Methodist standards for an ASHP‑Qualified Residency Preceptor within one year of employment. Licenses and Certifications Required Texas Pharmacist license (PSV) or eligibility for licensure within 90 days. Pharmacist Preceptor Certification (PSV) within 90 days. Basic Life Support (BLS) or instructor credential (AHA) within 90 days. Preferred Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or instructor credential (AHA). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or instructor credential (AHA). Intravenous (IV) certification (various). Board of Pharmacy Specialty certification. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates safe job performance through competencies, assessments, and evaluations. Proficient in English communication for safety and security. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family, and coworkers, using positive language. Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills; can coordinate major pharmacy service area activities. Professional competence in drug selection, evaluation, utilization, and distribution for all patient groups. Proficient in evidence‑based principles of rational drug therapy. Knowledge of operational pharmacy practice and direct patient care experience. Competence in research related to pharmacy practice and active credentialing with the Houston Methodist Academic Institute. Essential Functions People Promotes a positive work environment and collaborates with healthcare professionals to achieve department goals. Serves as a rotation preceptor for pharmacy students and residents and mentors staff pharmacists. Service Processes orders accurately, verifies drug appropriateness, exercises judgment, and documents patient care activities and outcomes. Provides patient‑specific and non‑patient‑specific drug information support. Serves on medical staff committees and contributes to committee objectives. Quality/Safety Collaborates on patient drug therapy management to maximize effectiveness and minimize adverse effects. Provides advanced pharmaceutical care, including proactive drug therapy reviews, counseling, transitions of care, and dosing protocol management. Participates in quality initiatives: medication use evaluation, adverse drug reaction and error reporting, clinical interventions, medication center reviews, and inventory management. Finance Supports pharmacoeconomically sound therapy by upholding formulary standards and avoiding medication‑related complications. Self‑motivated to manage time, prioritize tasks, and coordinate specialty area activities. Growth/Innovation Conducts in‑services and develops educational materials for pharmacy, medical, nursing, and other staff. Pursues learning beyond fundamental competencies and focuses on continued development as a specialist. Contributes to design, analysis, and reporting of quality improvement findings. Engages in research projects and publishes results.
