BAE Systems SMS sector is seeking a Technical Writer/Editor I to be a part of a team that supports winning new business and keeping our spacecraft programs and mission systems sold. Our technical writers/editors communicate the company's technical information in ways that are more understandable, usable, and accessible for employees and customers. The Technical Writer/Editor I will manage the production of new business proposals, assist our program teams with producing engineering documents to customers, and support the creation of critical program milestone briefings. We are looking for a writer who can not only distill complex information into easily understandable prose, but who can also write for a variety of audiences, including the public, the media, and our nearly 5,000 talented employees.
The role reports to the senior manager of Technical & Classified Communications within the Strategic Operations Strategic Capabilities Unit. The Strategic Operations (StratOps) Strategic Capabilities Unit, consists of Washington DC Operations, Marketing & Communications, Future Capabilities, Enterprise Strategy, Customer Requirements & Advocacy, and Business Winning. The StratOps team promotes and elevates the business within our markets, works with customers and industry to influence and drive growth, and facilitates collaboration across the business enterprise to increase opportunities. What You'll Do:
A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

What You'll Do:
- Proof, edit, write, research, organize, and format technical and non-technical content for business proposals, program reports, hardware specifications, user manuals, white papers, PowerPoint presentations, employee communication on the Intranet, feature articles, media releases, and some social media posts.
- Review and edit proposal, technical, programmatic, and marketing content for clarity, grammar, format, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Create forms, checklists, procedures, and work instructions to support business processes.
- Apply company- and community-specific publication standards, branding elements, style guides, and best practices to create high-quality, branded, professional content in all materials developed.
- Coordinate team efforts for document layout, illustration development, and reprographics for document production and final delivery.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
- Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Experience writing, editing, and proofreading.
- Ability to interview subject matter experts, grasp key technical concepts, and distill information into technically accurate, concise material.
- Ability to condense or revise highly technical content and ensure thoroughness and accuracy of all documents.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work multiple projects simultaneously, under deadline pressure with fast turnarounds.
- Ability to coordinate with project personnel, support functions, and subject matter experts.
- Ability to review the scope of documents against program objectives or proposal requirements to ensure compliance and completeness of information.
- Ability to work well with people as well as independently, and with little or no supervision after initial briefing.
- Ability to maintain a predictable work schedule with infrequent, occasional flexibility for evening or weekend work to meet deadlines, as needed.
- Ability to track and organize content for projects and meet deadlines.
- Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Skills and Education
- Ability to write in journalistic style and in accordance with several Style Guides, specifically AP Style Guide and Chicago Manual of Style preferred.
- Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint, Visio, and Project, and Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
- Ability to design the structure of complex documents preferred.
- Ability to identify and implement visual design elements to improve readability and understanding preferred.
- Ability to apply information mapping concepts to organize complicated topics preferred.
- Degree in Technical Writing, Technical Communication, Professional Writing, Journalism, English, Library Science, Art/Humanities, Public Relations, Marketing, or Communications.
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or STEM field, or another degree with an emphasis or demonstrated experience in writing.
