The Engineering Intern - Summer 2027 (Chicago, IL) role applies academic knowledge to real-world technical challenges by supporting consulting teams on a variety of projects within an assigned technical discipline. This role works alongside experienced technical professionals to assist with research, analysis, documentation, and project support activities that contribute to the successful delivery of client and internal initiatives. The Technical Services intern gains exposure to technical consulting work, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the project lifecycle while supporting tasks such as data analysis, technical evaluations, research, and preparation of technical materials. This role provides hands-on learning opportunities in a professional consulting environment. This role works under close supervision with regular guidance from more experienced colleagues or supervisors. Responsibilities

Collaborate with cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams to support project planning and execution. Support day-to-day activities within assigned projects and/or functional area Participate in internal and external meetings by taking notes, tracking action items, and supporting follow-up activities. Perform technical or support tasks within assigned functional area and technical specialty in support of project and team needs Successfully manage and deliver assignments on time. Perform a variety of technical and operational tasks assigned to support evolving business and team needs Attend and complete Intern Workshops and Intern Summer Series Sessions Complete intern capstone project assignment Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs. Skills and Competencies

No prior professional experience required.

Education

Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Software), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science Data Science) or a related field is required. Continued enrollment in accredited under or graduate degree program in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Software), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science Data Science) or a related field post internship is required. GPA equal to or higher than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent is required

Preferred Education Coursework in water and wastewater treatment, environmental engineering, hydraulics, fluid mechanics, water quality, or treatment process design. Academic projects involving water or wastewater treatment facilities, treatment process design, hydraulic modeling, or related infrastructure systems. Undergraduate research experience in water, wastewater, nutrient removal, water quality, or environmental treatment processes. Additional coursework, concentration, minor, or strong academic performance in chemistry or chemical engineering disciplines.

Preferred

Experience Demonstrated interest in water and wastewater engineering through coursework, research, internships, student organizations, or personal projects. Exposure to treatment plant design concepts, hydraulic calculations, fluid flow analysis, or process engineering applications. Experience supporting laboratory research, engineering projects, or technical teams focused on water quality, treatment processes, or environmental systems. Strong interest in pursuing a career in water and wastewater consulting rather than water resources, environmental policy, or unrelated environmental disciplines. Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and motivation to learn the technical aspects of treatment process engineering and the water sector.

Salary Range:

The hourly pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
