Pharmacy Technician
The position provides pharmacy services, inventory management and other pharmacy duties in accordance with state or federal Pharmacy laws and in close collaboration with the Pharmacist. The position requires availability or delegated availability to respond after working hours. Takes rotational call.
Primarily interacts with: administration, physicians, employees, clinical and non-clinical departments, patients, and visitors.
Essential functions include administering medications to patients as prescribed by the physician and assessing the effects of the medication, demonstrating knowledge of dosage, route, action, side effects and contraindications of medications, administering medications and narcotics following hospital policies and procedures, identifying drug interactions, knowledge of antidotes/treatment for medication overdose, calculating all dosages accurately, documenting appropriately, setting up and operating equipment on unit, keeping work area clean and neat, following procedures for body substance isolation system, reviewing medication orders and dispensings, accurately entering orders into the pharmacy computer system, filling and replacing medications and IV solutions to the automated dispensing machines, packaging and preparing medications in unit-dose containers, performing and completing all daily pharmacy activities related to medication delivery, reordering all medications as needed from the selected pharmacy vendor utilizing group-purchasing contracts, inspecting all medications purchased by pharmacy, conforming to pharmacy policies and procedures, learning and adhering to the rules and regulations of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy concerning Class C License, conforming to hospital policy on Drug Formulary, setting priorities and assuring the completion of care for all assigned patients, giving pertinent, accurate, concise organized reports and documents on record accordingly and inputs or retrieves information from EMR systems, developing, interpreting, implementing, evaluating, and documenting a plan of care for each patient using the nursing process, recognizing and reporting significant changes in patient's condition to appropriate person, assessing patient's response to his illness and hospital environment, initiating written plan of care for each patient within 24 hours of admission, reviewing nursing plan of care daily and as patient status changes, utilizing appropriate interpersonal skills when collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, implementing the medical plan of care, developing care plan that involves other disciplines of patient assessment, interventions and evaluations of that care, managing self, patient and other employees in any emergency situation, providing exemplary customer service, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, cooperating with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations, inter-departmental objectives and infection control policies, demonstrating timeliness and professionalism in appearance, communications, and actions during all interactions and with all individuals and entities, solving practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form, attending meetings as required, and performing other duties as requested or assigned.
Ability to use equipment, tools, materials, machines: Computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, scanner, printer, calculator and other standard office equipment. Standard Pharmacy equipment.
Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities: High school diploma or equivalent required. Valid licensed vocational nursing license in Texas. Pharmacy technician certification. BLS certification. One year nursing experience preferred. Medical office or healthcare experience preferred. Must be committed to quality and patient safety at all times. Excellent command/highly proficient in spoken and written English. Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, electronic medical documentation, and email. Must be effective at adjusting to change, prioritizing duties, handling stress and effectively communicating face-to-face and/or over the telephone. Must be able to work independently, and flexibly, and as a part of a multidisciplinary team. Must be able to manage several interruptions throughout the shift. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written. Must have strong time management skills. Must be able to work under pressure while interacting in a helpful, courteous manner with a high degree of patient contact. Sufficient hearing, vision and dexterity to perform duties safely.
