PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The PT Transcriptionist captions/transcribes verbal communicationin real-time with specialized technology in a variety of settings(class, labs, meetings, formal events) for students, faculty,staff, administration, and/or visitors to LSC, who are Deaf/Hard ofHearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans withDisabilities Act (ADA). Transcriptionists support and promote allpersons’ right to communication equity in learning and workplaceenvironments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provides real-time captioning services in the classroomsetting, as well as in a variety of speaking situations forstudents, staff, faculty, administration, and visitors at variouscollege functions and events throughout the year, both on-campusand off-campus Communicates with and gathers information from faculty in orderto effectively prepare for classroom sessions for both faculty andstudents Actively researches situations (and potential situations)involving new, technical, or complex information to gain anunderstanding of vocabulary that might be used Communicates client information, client status, and anyconcerns or challenges to supervisor. Rapidly sets up and breaks down captioning equipment andregularly relocates equipment to different assignment locations asneeded Ethically models positive and inclusive employee behavior Attends and actively participates in ASR department meetingsand activities Continuously reviews current processes and procedures, andshares challenges and improvement ideas with supervisor andteam Responsible for other reasonable, related duties asassigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability and willingness to accept captioning assignments at avariety of times and locations within the LSC service area, asneeded, which may include evenings and weekends Ability to listen to and rapidly understand spoken English, andthe ability to restate rapidly in correctly formed English, thefull meaning of what is heard in classes, meetings, and events Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling and academicvocabulary Excellent typing skills (65 wpm net) Ability to effectively use captioning equipment (TypeWell andCART) Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communicationskills Working knowledge of deafness, Deaf culture and the Deafcommunity Strong memory-recall ability and excellent reading skills Ability to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students withDisability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of studentinformation to faculty, parents, students, and other relatedfederal, state, and local regulations Proficient knowledge of computer use in the workplace isrequired, including typing, maintaining an electronic work calendarin the specified program(s), utilizing internet search engines, aswell as a variety of programs including word processing,spreadsheets, and databases Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and toquickly develop rapport with a wide variety of people Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tactand diplomacy Excellent listening and customer service skills Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attentionto detail and follow-through Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

Repetitive motion with finger and hands due to continuoustyping Sitting and typing for long periods of time

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in aMicrosoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other generaloffice equipment, as well as general captioning equipment/software(TypeWell and CART) Interface with internal and external contacts as needed tocarry out the functions of the position Work is generally performed in a climate-controlled office withminimal exposure to safety hazards. May include indoor and/oroutdoor laboratory environments with exposure to inclement weather,dust, dirt, etc. May include work in close quarters (e.g.,simulated or real truck-driving cab) as well as providing remoteservices. Assignments occur at a variety of times and locations withinthe LSC service area Includes evenings and weekends assignments

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate degree and at least 3 years of related workexperience, or an equivalent combination of education andexperience Successful completion of the TypeWell training program orappropriate CART qualifications Reliable mode of transportation to travel between assignmentswithin the LSC Service Area

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
