Welder

This role involves using hand-welding equipment to weld and join metal components and to fill holes, indentations, or seams on fabricated metal products. Working under the guidance of the department lead, you apply basic knowledge of welding and grinding to produce high-quality parts that meet specifications. Initial training is provided on first shift to ensure you understand processes, equipment, and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate entry-level welding ability on steel and perform consistent, quality welds.
  • Position materials to be welded using standard fixtures and apply precise hand-eye coordination to achieve the desired weld.
  • Weld components in all positions, including flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
  • Regulate heat and wire speed on MIG and pulse arc welders to achieve proper penetration and bead quality.
  • Operate MIG and pulse arc wire feed welders, plasma torch, oxyacetylene cutting equipment, stick welders, and other welding tools as needed.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, grind, and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Monitor equipment operation and materials to detect faulty performance or defects and promptly notify the supervisor.
  • Inspect completed parts for defects, measure workpieces to ensure they follow prints, and verify welds are free of voids and excess fill material with slag properly cleaned.
  • Use air tools such as grinders, cutting wheels, and dual-action sander/grinders to finish welds and surfaces.
  • Grind and finish excess welds to the desired surface quality using appropriate grinding and DA tools.
  • Check and monitor fitting and welding processes to minimize warping or distortion of materials.
  • Read, interpret, and work from specifications, drawings, prints, and basic welding symbols to complete jobs accurately.
  • Use and read measuring tools such as tape measures, calculators, squares, and related devices to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Communicate with the supervisor to receive instructions, clarify requirements, and exchange production information.

Essential Skills

  • Entry-level welding ability on steel, with the capability to produce consistent and structurally sound welds.
  • Ability to perform MIG welding and TIG welding on metal components.
  • Experience with spot welding, saw operation, drill press, and roller equipment in a fabrication environment.
  • Proficiency in welding in multiple positions, including flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
  • Ability to regulate heat and wire speed on MIG and pulse arc welders for proper weld quality.
  • Skill in operating MIG and pulse arc wire feed welders, plasma torch, oxyacetylene cutting tools, and stick welders.
  • Competence in using air tools such as grinders, cutting wheels, and dual-action sander/grinders.
  • Ability to grind and finish welds to the required surface quality.
  • Capability to read, interpret, and work from specifications, drawings, prints, and basic welding symbols.
  • Ability to accurately use measuring tools including tape measures, calculators, and squares.
  • 6 months to 1 year of aluminum welding experience in a production or fabrication setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a metal fabrication and processing environment.
  • Attention to detail in inspecting welds and finished parts for defects and compliance with prints.
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise welding and grinding tasks.
  • Ability to identify equipment malfunctions or material defects and communicate issues promptly.
  • Comfort working under the direction of a department lead and collaborating with supervisors for production updates.
  • Willingness to work different shifts and potential overtime as needed to meet production demands.
