Job Description

Purpose of Position: The Class B Operator performs truck and equipment operation and manual, administrative and supervisory work to coordinate the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways, bridges, culverts, and other structures on the County Trunk Highway System and the maintenance of the State Highway System within Clark County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position and this list is not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Required to possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License with B, C & N and Air Brake Endorsements, ability to operate manual transmissions.
  • Ability to operate heavy trucks which require at a minimum valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Class B License
  • Perform duties as assigned such as snowplowing, various highway improvement, maintenance and repair work.
  • Respond to emergency calls at any time, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Consult with supervisor(s) to obtain project or procedure changes
  • Perform heavy manual work
  • Perform equipment maintenance including, but not limited to, preventative maintenance, greasing, oil changes, regular thorough washing and cleaning, minor repairs, mounting and dismounting of equipment attachments, changing plow and wing blades.
  • Perform related work, including labor and semi-skilled assignments
  • Complete accurate operational and preventative maintenance records in a neat, clear, timely and concise manner

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions A high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of experience in truck operation, highway maintenance and/or highway construction is required. Required to possess a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License with B, C & N and Air Brake and Manual Transmission Endorsements. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills to use the following small equipment: measuring devices, mobile radio and small hand tools such as chainsaws, brush saws, lawnmower, shovel, pick, axe, and weed eaters
  • Knowledge and skills to use the following highway equipment: trucks - pickup through quad-axle, snowplows, patrol wings, material spreaders, self-contained air compressor with attachments, tractor with commercial mowing attachments, brush chipper, material melter with attachments, skid steer loader
  • Ability to work odd hours and week-ends as needed
  • Ability to respond within 30 minutes when called in an emergency
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees and the public

Computer and Office Equipment Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, digital telephone, calculator, copy machine, camera, etc.

Mathematical Ability Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Language Ability, Interpersonal Communication Skills, and Other Knowledge and Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively, organize ideas and communicate messages appropriately before and to groups of customer or employees of the organization. Ability to find meaning of unknown or technical words and phrases. Ability to ask questions when needed. Ability to listen carefully to correctly understand content and feelings being expressed and respond in a way that shows understanding of what is said.
