Detention Officer

The Detention Officer enforces rules and regulations governing the operation of the Pascua Yaqui Detention facility and the confinement, safety, health and protection of inmates and the community.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Processing prisoners into the Pascua Yaqui Detention Facility; taking mug shots, searching prisoners, taking inventory of prisoner's personal property, authorizing phone calls, obtaining fingerprints, filling out necessary booking sheets, and recording entries in the booking log in department database.
  2. Maintaining the detention facilities and equipment; providing meals to prisoners; authorizing and monitoring prisoners in and out of holding cells, during telephone calls; transferring prisoners from one cell to another; and cleaning detention cells as necessary.
  3. Restraining combative, suicidal, or mentally disturbed prisoners; determining if prisoners are ill or injured and obtaining medical attention as necessary.
  4. Ensuring timely court appearances for all prisoners; escorting prisoners to Tribal Court for appearances.
  5. Determining release criteria of prisoners according to established procedures.
  6. First line supervision of offenders, inmates; includes adult/juvenile, males/females.
  7. Ensuring compliance with tribal, state, and federal laws related to Detention Services.
  8. Following policies and procedures; effectively supervising and communicating with inmates; maintaining daily activity logs.
  9. Coordinating detention operations with patrol, investigations, and administrative staff.
  10. Coordinating tribal, state, federal facility transfers and release of inmates.
  11. Working with other departments as it pertains to inmate services.
  12. Preparing written reports when required to assist in police investigations.
  13. Transporting of prisoners to and from tribal, state and federal correction's facilities, medical treatment facilities, and other designated facilities.
  14. Assisting Commissioned Pascua Yaqui Police Officers with transports, of arrested subjects and/or prisoners to local facilities, or as directed by chain of command.
  15. Performing other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Knowledge of federal, state and tribal statutes, codes and ordinances to be enforced;
  • Use of law enforcement equipment including communications and automotive;
  • Use of impact and non-impact weapons and proper use of restraints;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills and abilities:
  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other law enforcement agencies, regulatory agencies, organization staff, tribal officers, criminal justice system staff, and the public/community;
  • Use a standard two-way radio;
  • Write reports and communicate orally with supervisors and other institutional staff, as well as keeping accurate records;
  • Operate police/or detention assigned vehicle;
  • Exercise effective judgments in emergency situations; maintain composure in stressful or crisis situations;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Education, certifications, and experience required:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred;
  • Experience in working with Native American communities and community members is required;
  • Must successfully complete training from a designated detention academy within six (6) months of employment;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen;
  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age and must not have been dishonorable discharged from the United States Armed Forces;
  • Pass a Medical examination by a licensed physician;
  • Candidate must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor or criminal offense involving moral turpitude in Arizona nor any tribal, state or federal jurisdiction; where the commission of such a criminal offense would be a misdemeanor as defined by Arizona Revised Statutes;
  • Candidate must not have been convicted of a felony;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
Special requirements:
  • Must be CPR/First Aid Certified within three months of hire;
  • Must have attended Blood borne Pathogen safety training within three months of hire;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Must have a FBI, BIA, Tribal Court background checks, and an Arizona POST Clearance, which includes a Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card. Failure to maintain a current clearance from the aforementioned agencies will result in removal from this position.
