The Surgical Clinical Veterinarian possesses proficient surgical skills and is passionate about supporting the exciting advances in biomedical research. The work will help advance our understanding and contribute to improvements of medical and surgical care for both humans and animals. The Surgical Clinical Veterinarian will be part of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) large animal veterinary team (60% support) and the Querrey Simpson Institute for Regenerative Engineering at Northwestern University (RENU) (40% support). The CCM is a core service, teaching and training unit dedicated to supporting"humane"animal care and use in research and education at Northwestern University. We provide quality animal care and promote animal welfare and regulatory compliance through efficient operations and positive collaborations with faculty,"students"and staff. Specific responsibilities include:
Weekend, holiday, and off-hour availability for veterinary emergencies is required and shared on a rotating basis with the CCM veterinarians."Occasional travel between the Chicago and Evanston campus may be required. Work hours are typically 8-5 but can be flexible and should add up to 40 hours per week. Work may require extended hours sitting at a computer terminal and/or several hours of standing while performing surgery and walking in and around the animal facility. Work will require access to the animal facilities. Must be enrolled in the university's occupational health program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the university's occupational health provider for review. Must be willing to undergo job related background check.

- Provides medical and surgical support for primarily large laboratory animal species, i.e. pigs, dogs, sheep and rabbits, including anesthesia, postoperative care and monitoring and gross necropsy evaluations.
- Perform imaging and other diagnostic procedures.
- Familiar with large animal IACUC protocols and may assist researchers in the development and preparation of IACUC protocols.
- Assists in the development of SOPs and other documents for CCM and the IACUC.
- Delivers various modes of training and/or presentations for CCM staff and others that use animals in research.

Specific Responsibilities :
- Research Support:
- Supports specific research projects involving large animal models.
- Performs surgical procedures on large animals and postoperative care and monitoring.
- Provides anesthesia for large animal surgery.
- Performs gross necropsy evaluations.
- Performs imaging procedures e.g. radiography, fluoroscopy
- Medical and research record keeping, interpretation/analysis of data and maintains current and compliant IACUC protocols
- CCM Large Animal Clinical Support:
- Implements the program for clinical evaluation and management of experimental animals requiring veterinary care.
- Provides anesthesia and surgical support for large and small animal surgery.
- Performs clinical examinations of incoming and colony animals.
- Performs gross necropsy evaluations as part of the programs for animal health surveillance and disease control.
- Participates in the rotating on-call schedule.
- CCM:
- On a limited basis may review protocols submitted by Principal Investigators (PI's) involving animal use in research, teaching and testing as part of the review by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). Assists researchers in the development and preparation of IACUC protocols.
- CCM:
- Assists with the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures, Policies and Guidelines for CCM and the IACUC.
- CCM:
- Delivers lectures, laboratories and other teaching and training as appropriate on the care and use of laboratory animals in research for CCM staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, investigators, laboratory personnel and other research personnel within Northwestern University.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or successful completion of the Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates program
- Hold a current and valid license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
- Good surgical skills; Basic knowledge of suture handling and aseptic technique
- Anesthesia monitoring; pre-, peri- and post-operative knowledge of animal maintenance and care
- Two years of formal surgical postdoctoral training or one year of surgical postdoctoral training or internship plus one year of experience in private practice (or other relevant surgical experience). General awareness and working knowledge of United States laboratory animal regulatory requirements.
