Electrical Service Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified or Non-Certified Electrical Service Technician is responsible for performing electrical service, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation work across a variety of commercial and industrial electrical systems and equipment. This position requires strong troubleshooting and technical skills, the ability to work independently, and the ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Technicians will work across a wide range of electrical systems and voltage levels while operating from an assigned company service vehicle. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded service electrician who can independently diagnose and resolve electrical issues while also having the ability to step into a Service Foreman or lead role when needed. This may include running projects, coordinating field activities, directing other electricians, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform electrical service, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation in commercial and industrial environments
• Independently diagnose electrical problems, determine appropriate solutions, and complete repairs
• Serve in a lead or foreman capacity as needed, including running projects, coordinating field activities, and directing other electricians
• Read and interpret blueprints, plan sets, one-line diagrams, shop drawings, submittals, cut sheets, specifications, and technical diagrams
• Use electrical testing and diagnostic equipment to identify and troubleshoot electrical problems
• Work with electrical distribution, controls, lighting, motors, generators, and other related electrical systems and equipment
• Perform work across multiple voltage levels and AC/DC systems
• Coordinate work with customers, facility personnel, project managers, other trades, and inspectors as required
• Ensure work complies with applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, project requirements, and company safety procedures
• Maintain accurate service records and clearly communicate findings, recommendations, and completed work

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 1 year of electrical service experience; experience independently operating from a service vehicle preferred
• Strong ability to troubleshoot and diagnose electrical systems and equipment
• Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, schematics, one-line diagrams, and technical documentation
• Understanding of electrical theory, including Ohm's Law, capacitance, inductance, and circuit behavior
• Ability to perform electrical calculations including conductor ampacity, voltage drop, load calculations, and continuity/resistance analysis
• Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic equipment, including voltmeters, clamp meters, megohmmeters, thermal imaging cameras, power quality analyzers, and cable tracers
• Strong working knowledge of the NEC, with an understanding of applicable building, fire/life-safety, and green building codes and standards, including the IBC, applicable NFPA standards, and CALGreen
• Ability to identify electrical hazards and follow applicable safe-work practices
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team
• Ability to communicate professionally with customers, facility personnel, project managers, inspectors, and other trades

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Electrical Systems & Equipment

Experience with the installation, service, maintenance, and troubleshooting of commercial and industrial electrical systems and equipment, including:

• Switchboards, panelboards, breakers, transformers, and electrical distribution equipment
• Motors, pumps, MCCs, generators, and transfer switches
• Control devices and systems including relays, contactors, VFDs, timers, and sensors
• Grounding and bonding systems
• Generator controls and associated fuel-system controls

Candidates are not expected to be experts in every system listed above; however, they should possess a strong electrical foundation and the ability to troubleshoot, learn, and work with a variety of electrical equipment.

Lighting & Lighting Controls

Experience with commercial lighting and lighting control systems is preferred, including:

• Lutron
• Crestron
• nLight
• Fresco
• Greengate
• Legrand
• Wattstopper
• Lithonia / Acuity / Synergy
• Phase dimming, line-voltage controls, and 0-10V dimming systems

VOLTAGE & SYSTEM KNOWLEDGE

• Experience working with electrical systems up to 600 VAC, including 480/277V, 240V, 208/120V, and 120V systems
• Experience with low-voltage AC/DC control systems
• Understanding of single-phase and three-phase electrical systems, including high-leg delta configurations
• Familiarity with higher-voltage DC equipment and systems, including EV charging equipment operating up to 1,000 VDC, is preferred

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

The following experience is beneficial but not required for consideration:

• Experience serving as a Service Foreman, Working Foreman, Lead Electrician, or similar leadership role, while remaining capable of independently performing service work
• Experience leading projects, coordinating manpower and field activities, and directing other electricians
• EV charging equipment, including Level 2 and DC fast-charging systems
• Inverters and solar-related electrical equipment
• Building Automation Systems (BAS)
• Energy management and daylighting control systems
• Fire/life-safety system components and controls
• Commercial parking and access-related electrical systems

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work from ladders, lifts, and elevated locations
• Ability to perform the physical tasks associated with electrical service and installation work
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental and weather conditions

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Field-based position requiring travel to customer locations and job sites
• An assigned company service vehicle will remain in the employee's care. Employee must maintain adequate and secure parking at their residence for the vehicle when not in use and will typically drive directly between their residence and assigned job sites
• Work may be performed in active commercial and industrial facilities, construction environments, electrical/mechanical rooms, rooftops, and other field conditions
• Must be available to work flexible hours, overtime, and respond to emergency service calls as required
