Position Summary

Mint City Excavating is seeking a skilled and reliable  In-Shop General Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our shop maintenance team in Saint Johns, MI. In this role, you will perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, mechanical diagnostics, component rebuilds, and repairs on a wide variety of heavy dirt equipment, diesel dump trucks, trailers, and shop tooling. You will play a vital role in minimizing fleet downtime, maintaining equipment safety, and supporting field operations from our primary facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Equipment Diagnostics & Repair:
• • Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy excavation machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, skid steers, mini-excavators, screening plants, and rollers.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic (CAN bus), power-train, steering, brake, and engine control systems.
  • Troubleshoot diesel engines, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, control valves, and hydrostatic drives.
• Preventative Maintenance (PM):
• • Execute routine preventative maintenance schedules across the fleet, including fluid and filter changes, system flushes, chassis lubrication, and track/undercarriage tension adjustments.
  • Perform comprehensive safety inspections on equipment before it is dispatched to jobsites.
• Truck & Trailer Fleet Service:
• • Perform general mechanical repairs and maintenance on company dump trucks, heavy haul transports, service vehicles, and equipment trailers.
  • Service brake systems (air and hydraulic), suspensions, drivelines, lighting, and hydraulic wet kits.
• Fabrication & Shop Operations:
• • Perform light structural repairs, hardfacing, cutting, and welding (MIG/STICK) on excavator buckets, blades, bodies, and attachments.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment in compliance with OSHA and company safety protocols.
  • Document all repairs, parts used, labor hours, and work orders in the maintenance management system.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: 3+ years of experience as a mechanical technician working on heavy construction equipment, medium/heavy-duty diesel trucks, or agricultural machinery.
• Technical Skills:
• • Solid understanding of diesel engines (CAT, Cummins, Deere, Volvo, or similar), hydraulic systems, and 12V/24V electrical schematics.
  • Experience using diagnostic laptops/scanners and multimeter equipment to troubleshoot system faults.
  • Basic to intermediate welding and torch-cutting ability for equipment repairs.
• Tools: Must possess a personal set of basic hand tools and pneumatic/impact tools suitable for heavy equipment service (specialty shop tools provided by company).
• Certifications & Licensing:
• • Valid Driver’s License required (Commercial Driver's License - Class A CDL is a strong plus).
  • ASE, Diesel Technology, or manufacturer-specific certifications are beneficial.
• Physical Capabilities: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, bend, stoop, climb on heavy machinery, and stand for extended periods in a shop setting.
