Merchandising Assistant Store Manager In Training

Position Purpose Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training (MASM-IT) will gain hands‑on experience in the key responsibilities and functions of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot. The MASM‑IT program includes hands‑on experience, mentorship, and leadership development. During training, students will become familiar with Manager on Duty duties and learn to oversee the various Merchandising departments—Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing, and Electrical—to ensure the successful execution of key programs that enhance customer service, product availability, and store presentation. They will collaborate with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers (ASMs), and Merchandising field teams to develop and implement strategies that boost sales and profitability, create actionable game plans for departmental success, and ensure smooth department operations. MASMs‑IT are expected to lead by example and uphold all lawful company policies. Key Responsibilities 15% Customer Experience – supervising associates, promoting a culture to lead with enthusiasm, and ensuring customer concerns are resolved promptly. 10% Operations Management – performing opening, closing, and other store‑wide responsibilities, adhering to company policies, and maintaining SOPs, especially for safety compliance. 10% Safety – ensuring self and associates follow all safety and hazmat procedures. 15% Sales & Productivity – planning merchandise placement, supporting stock integrity, managing inventory, and performing daily financial operations. 50% Training & Preparation for Assistant Manager – participating in a structured program covering retail store management, staffing, scheduling, stock deficiency resolution, associate supervision, customer issue resolution, service needs, performance management, and completion of all training modules and assessments. Direct Manager/Direct Reports Reports to the Store Manager. Has 0 direct reports. Travel Requirements Typically requires overnight travel less than 5% of the time. Physical Requirements Must continuously stand or walk or regularly lift/handle/carry 8–20 pounds of material or equipment. Working Conditions Located in a comfortable indoor area; any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable. Minimum Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be legally permitted to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross‑functional teams. Minimum Education High school diploma or GED. Preferred Education Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a field related to the job. Minimum Years Of Work Experience 1 year.
