Summary Our Cape Girardeau Health Care Center (HCC) – Cape Girardeau, MO – is currently accepting applications for a Licensed Practical Nurse vacancy in our Primary Care Clinic. The Cape Girardeau HCC provides a number of services to the catchment area including: Primary Care, Ambulatory, Specialty Care, Mental Health, Telehealth, and Community Health/Home Care. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Licensure: Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Licensure restrictions: An LPN/LVN who has ever had any license revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or placed on probation may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter3, sectionB, paragraph16 of this part. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both spoken and written English. Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must meet the proficiency requirements set forth in 38U.S.C.7402(d) and7407(d). Grandfathering: May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable only to current VHA employees who meet the criteria). Grade determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met for each grade. GS‑3: None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license, e.g., medication administration. GS‑4: May be appointed or advanced if they meet any of the following: (a) Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN. (b) Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience in a nursing care environment such as a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical facility providing practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques. (c) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration. (d) Perform all duties expected at GS‑3 and exercise greater judgment, require less supervision, and operate in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and techniques. GS‑5: Requires (a) At least one year of qualifying experience at GS‑4 or equivalent. (b) Ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with varied physical and/or behavioral problems. (c) Ability to orient and train less experienced LPNs/LVNs and Nursing Assistants, and provide education to patients and families regarding disease processes, medications, and treatment regimes. (d) Ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team, interacting appropriately with patients, families, professionals, and supportive personnel while incorporating customer service standards. (e) Knowledge and skill to prepare, administer, and document actions taken for commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications as permitted by facility policies. (f) Ability to recognize and initiate emergency measures, seek assistance from RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures. (g) Work is under general supervision of an RN or MD/DO. Expects a broad working knowledge of practical nursing procedures, with more complex practices subject to higher‑level review. GS‑6: Must have at least one year of additional qualifying experience at GS‑5 or equivalent and fully meet all performance requirements for that level. Responsibilities include initiation, performance, and completion of patient care duties for variable populations, accurate documentation, and emergency intervention under RN or MD/DO supervision. Preferred Experience: 1‑2 years of clinical nursing experience, with primary care experience preferred. Physical requirements: Light to heavy lifting and carrying (15‑45pounds or more), pushing (2hours), reaching above shoulder, walking (5hours), standing (3hours), repeated bending (2hours), and use of both hands. Requires rapid mental and muscular coordination, far‑vision correction to 20/50 and 20/100, near‑vision correction within specified ranges, depth perception, basic color discrimination, and hearing (aid permitted). This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). Proof must be provided before employment. Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) providing direct patient care in the Primary Care Clinic. Core duties: Patient evaluation and preparation for clinic providers, medication refills/renewals, completion of required forms (disability and handicap placards, etc.), injections, and assistance with scanning and secure messaging. Provide a full range of nursing care to patients with varied physical and behavioral health problems under limited supervision. Serve as a responsible member of the nursing team, interacting with patients, families, and supportive personnel. Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 am–5:30 pm (rotating shifts based on facility needs). Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rates may be awarded for unique qualifications or special VA needs. Paid Time Off: 37 – 50 days per year (13 – 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays).
