Inventory Management Specialist

Summary This position serves as an Inventory Manager in the Commodity Management Division of the Logistics Service in the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. The Manager is responsible for the inventory and management of all expendable supplies and durable medical equipment in the assigned area(s). Qualifications Time‑In‑Grade: Federal employees must meet the required time‑in‑grade for GS‑07 and GS‑09 within 52 weeks. Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level (for GS‑07) or the GS‑07 level (for GS‑09). Key duties include managing expendable items and durable medical equipment, forecasting inventory needs, analyzing inventory reports, using automated systems, resolving issues, and implementing federal programs. Graduate Education: One full year of graduate level education that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills. Combination: Equivalent combination of education and experience as outlined above. Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Baccalaureate level with qualifying curriculum and recognized class standing, GPA, or national honor society membership. Applicants must provide SF‑50, transcripts, and other documentation as required to substantiate qualifications. Duties Inventory Management and Control: manage and control an assigned class of expendable material. Serve as the point of contact for coordination of material support and resolution of logistics problems. Conduct forecasting and quantitative analysis of inventory needs. Perform spot checks and comply with special requirements for firearms, ammunition, and sensitive equipment. Returns, Re‑calls, and Reutilization: implement federal and agency programs for return and reutilization of medical supplies. Coordinate disposal of surplus or excess supplies. Make emergent procurement decisions and participate in root cause analysis. Perform other related duties as assigned. Preferred Experience: Manage medical and surgical supply inventories within a healthcare environment, including demand forecasting, inventory optimization, product standardization, and supply utilization analysis. Experience with automated inventory systems, clinical stakeholder collaboration, recall and expiration‑sensitive product management, and process improvements is highly desirable. Promotion Potential: May be promoted to full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Telework may be authorized (discussed during interview), including ad‑hoc telework. This is not a virtual position.
