Job Description

The Maintenance Technician ensures the reliable operation of manufacturing equipment and facilities within a food production environment. This role combines strong mechanical and electrical skills, systematic troubleshooting, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, hygienic, and compliant workplace. The technician supports continuous production by performing preventive maintenance, resolving equipment issues quickly, and upholding strict food safety and sanitation standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine preventive maintenance on production machinery, including conveyors, mixers, packaging equipment, and refrigeration systems, to ensure efficient and reliable operation.

• Conduct regular inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and performance checks on equipment to meet production requirements and minimize unplanned downtime.

• Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement effective repairs to restore equipment to optimal operating condition.

• Respond promptly to emergency, unscheduled troubleshooting and repairs during the manufacturing process to prevent or reduce production disruptions.

• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the production area and maintenance workspaces, ensuring compliance with sanitation standards and food safety regulations.

• Monitor, maintain, and repair facility systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, to support a safe, comfortable, and efficient working environment.

• Follow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe work practices when working on equipment and facility systems.

• Participate in safety training programs and contribute ideas and feedback to support ongoing safety initiatives and a strong safety culture.

• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as GMP, HACCP, and OSHA, as well as company policies related to food safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations.

• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment inspections, repairs, and parts usage, in the computer maintenance management system.

• Document equipment repairs, parts replacements, and maintenance procedures to track equipment history, performance trends, and recurring issues.

• Collaborate with production, quality, and other cross-functional teams to coordinate maintenance activities, minimize downtime, and support production schedules.

• Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance equipment reliability, improve maintenance processes, and reduce maintenance-related costs.

• Work flexible, non-standard hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support production demands and critical maintenance activities.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED.

• Minimum of 5 years of related experience in an industrial manufacturing environment, preferably in an automated food processing plant.

• At least 5 years of experience troubleshooting and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems.

• Strong mechanical aptitude with proven troubleshooting skills for industrial equipment.

• Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs on PLCs, relay logic, and logic controllers, as well as 480V, 220V, and 110V AC single- and three-phase and DC systems.

• Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting, including platforms such as Allen-Bradley and Siemens.

• Experience with HMI development and SCADA systems in an industrial environment.

• Strong understanding of electrical systems, including motors, drives, and industrial sensors.

• Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to electrical and control systems.

• Ability to perform mechanical repairs on hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

• Effective problem-solving skills with high attention to detail in diagnosing and resolving equipment issues.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

• Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

• Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and learn new technologies as needed.

• Ability to operate a computer and use a computer maintenance management system to support and record maintenance documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a food manufacturing or food processing environment with exposure to GMP and HACCP requirements.

• Hands-on experience with industrial electrical systems, including three-phase power and 3-phase motor controls.

• Familiarity with industrial troubleshooting tools and techniques for both mechanical and electrical systems.

• Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs and related automation components.

• Background in welding or basic fabrication to support maintenance and repair activities.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.

• Comfort working with hydraulics and pneumatics in a production environment.

• Experience using industrial maintenance software for work orders, parts inventory, and equipment history tracking.

• Demonstrated ability to support multiple shifts and work schedules, including first, second, third, and weekend shifts as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a food manufacturing facility operating multiple shifts, including first shift (approximately 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday), second shift (approximately 3:00 p.m.–11:30 p.m., Monday through Friday), third shift (approximately 11:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday), and a weekend 12-hour shift (Friday–Sunday, approximately 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.), with opportunities to work up to six days per week depending on production needs. The work environment involves daily exposure to typical industrial conditions, including dirt, dust, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, and areas with lower lighting. There is seasonal exposure to weather elements such as extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity. The position requires working around mechanical equipment, forklifts, chemical and electrical hazards, and other physical risks, following strict safety procedures. Physical demands include standing and walking throughout the office, warehouse, and plant; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; and frequent reaching, kneeling, crawling, twisting, and use of fine motor skills. The role also requires the ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly with colleagues in a professional manner while working with tools, machinery, and computer-based maintenance systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $37.00/hr.
